The Great South Run 2007

Great South Run

Thousands of runners braved the wet and windy weather to take part in the South's biggest road race - the annual Great South Run in Portsmouth.

The fast, flat 10 mile course passes many of the historic landmarks in Portsmouth and Southsea and is one of the most popular mass participation runs in Britain, regularly attracting top athletes from around the world.

An impressive display from world marathon champion Luke Kibet, saw the Kenyan take charge of the men's race race in the last 2.5 miles.

Battered by the wind and rain off the Solent in the final straight along Southsea seafront, he clocked a time of 47 minutes 31 seconds, 19 seconds ahead of Spaniard Chema Martinez with Jonathan Maiyo of Kenya third, just two seconds behind in third place.

In the women's race, there was more success for Kenya, with Rose Cheruiyot dominating the 10-mile race from the start, coming in in a time of 53 minutes 44 seconds

Meanwhile Tushar Patel and Anne Wafula-Strike won the men's and women's wheelchair races.

Behind the elite athletes were thousands of club runners and charity fundraisers, all hoping to complete the course as a personal achievements and raise millions of pounds for good causes in the process.

Lacing up their trainers for the event this year were runners from Portsmouth Football Club including Chief Executive Peter Storrie and owner Sasha Gaydamak, running in aid of Round Table Children's Wish.

Other celebrities who took part included Eastenders stars Jake Wood (Max Branning) and BBC Sport's John Motson and Ray Stubbs.

I took part in the GSR for the second year running, I must say that this year seemed to be harder due to the wind and rain. The atmosphere did not, listening to the bands playing at the side of the roads as you ran, certainly was a welcome sight and sound. Everyone i spoke to was friendly and enthusiastic.
