Hampshire Cricket Legend Remembered

Hampshire cricket has lost one of their all time great bowlers. Derek Shackleton who, in a 22 year career, amassed over 2,800 wickets for the County, died in Dorset on 27 September, at the age of 83.

Former Hampshire batsman, Mike Barnard played with "Shack" for a number of seasons - and was also part of the Hampshire side that won the County Championship in 1961.

"He was very quiet, very smooth, very smart with not a hair out of place normally. I never saw him bowl without a short-sleeved sweater on - we thought it was stitched to his shirt!"

Mike spoke to BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James - you can listen to his tribute by clicking the audio link below.

Shackleton was known as "Mr. Consistency" and for 20 consecutive seasons took over 100 wickets. In one season he took 172.

Incredibly "Shack" only played seven times for England, but his career coincided with Alec Bedser who was an ever present bowler in the England side.
