White Air 2007

Adrenaline-junkies are in for some great action - on water and on land - at the Isle of Wight's annual weeklong extreme sports festival.

The Isle of Wight is once again playing host to one of the biggest water and land based extreme sports festival in Europe.

Extreme Action

The eleventh White Air festival, based at Yaverland, Sandown features the world's top adrenalin junkies competing both on the water and on land.

On the water will be Windsurfing Racing, Freestyle Windsurfing, Kitesurfing, Surfing, Thundercats, Surf Kayak Racing and Jet Ski Freestyle.

The natural arena of Yaverland means the 35,000 spectators who attend the festival get great views of the action on the water.

Although the crowds basked in sunshine at the start of the week, the lack of wind meant the windsurfers were confined to land.

However there are plenty of land-based events as well - skate, BMX, Mountain Boarding and Mountain Biking, and Parkour competitors will all be in action.

Meanwhile on the beach there's the new additions of Frisbee Freestyle with and Speedminton displays.

There are also Have a Go sessions with the chance to try out gear from various manufacturers and the chance to learn the art of Mountain Boarding, Parkour and the art of free running, Paragliding, or the basics of Kitesurfing, or Windsurfing and Surfing.

White Air is the creation of Islander Nigel Howell, a former world champion wavesailor who started the festival when he realised there wasn't enough professional level competitions in the UK. This is the first time the event has been held in August.

Live music

After all the action, there is a chance to chill out with the Friday and Saturday night parties and top local bands on the Platform One Stage - a new addition to the festival.

Platform One, the Island's independent music college already stages the successful Bandstand at the Isle of Wight Festival and for the first time is showcasing the Island's best young bands during White Air.

Over 50 punk, metal, pop, acoustic, rock, hip-hop, funk artists will be playing through the week with local heroes, The Bees headlining on the Wednesday 29 August evening.
