What is mental maths?

Mental maths is when you do calculations in your head instead of writing them down.
Sometimes, it's just as quick to do calculations in your head as it is to write down every step.
You can add and subtract using your knowledge of doubles and number bonds.
Even though you're working things out in your head, you can still write down notes to help you if you need.

Using mental maths
There are lots of different tools that help you to do mental addition and subtraction.
Remember, it doesn't have to be done entirely in your head, you can still use a pencil and paper to help.
Find out about some of the tools you can use in the slideshow below.

Image caption, Knowing doubles can help when adding numbers near to these doubles.

Image caption, You can use an empty number line to help find the difference between numbers. To find the difference between numbers you can either count up or down - whichever you prefer!

Example 1

How can you rearrange the numbers in the calculation and use numbers bonds to find the answer?
✓ 32 + 17 + 8 becomes much easier if you rearrange it to:
32 + 8 + 17
You know that 2 + 8 is a number bond to 10, so:
32 + 8 = 40
Then add on the 17 to get 57 in total.
40 + 17 = 57

Example 2

What near double could you use to help find the answer?
✓ Double 14 is 28, so 14 + 15 must be one more than 28.

Example 3

How can you use a number line to find the difference in this subtraction?
✓ You can find the difference between numbers by either counting up from the smallest number to the biggest number, or by counting down from the biggest number to the smallest.
You can jump to multiples of 10 to make this easier.
