Sunday at the games

The first day of the 2009 Island Games in Åland saw a mix of success and dissapointment for Guernsey's competitors.

The highlight of the first day's action in Åland came when Guernsey runner Steve Dawes picked up a silver medal in the 10000m finishing only two minutes behind former European Champion Janne Holmenm, who was running on home turf.

Guernsey's other medal on the Sunday came in the judo as Roberto Maschurucci secured a bronze despite suffering a broken toe during the heats. He said it felt like more of an achievement than winning gold at the Island Games in Rhodes two years ago.

There was more success for the Guernsey team in the tennis as both Dom McCluskey and Patrick Ogier won their opening games. Dom won 6-4, 6-0 following an impressive 11 game comeback streak against Gotland's, Bjorn Carlnas while Patrick won his game with a comfortable 6-1, 6-2.

In the men's football Guernsey drew their first match against Gibraltar 0-0 and in the women's football Guernsey drew 2-2 against Hitra.
