Balancing our options 2008

I have lived in the Castel since 1998.

Though unelected four years ago, I have remained close to issues affecting our Parish, and the island. Including La Mare de Carteret Primary School Parish Committee, I am an active member of several community organisations.

Though I work hard to gather the facts behind the issues, access to information, and to policy-making in progress, is limited for those outside government.

People say they want investment in our youngest and young adult citizens, in our aging and elderly, and to preserve our unique environment.

Huge challenges from the outside world are forcing us to face uncomfortable, rapid change. We can't control the causes - only how we react. Carefully balancing our options will ensure the social and economic health of our society, its individuals, and of our vulnerable autonomy.

To be prepared, we need GOOD GOVERNMENT: teamwork, responsive and flexible, responsible behaviour and we all deserve accountability, and openness. Axing redundant programmes, weeding out entrenched mandates, and forcing joined-up co-operation between departments, will create savings. The framework of the Government Business Plan, and real, listening conversation with the people of Guernsey, favour a common vision for our best possible future.

Immediately overhaul how we contract, to prevent overspends. Crucial population debates will design our evolving lifestyles. Reform the Housing licence system. Savings can be made in Health and Social Security budgets. Student loans are discriminatory.

Finance houses, beneficiaries of Zero/10, can assist. Adjust Zero/10 to unburden our middle-earners. Release appropriate land for local businesses. New TRP is inequitable. No GST. Go greener, including corporations. Stop raw sewage.

I have the integrity, courage, and desire to serve you, and Guernsey, as a member of your government. Please give me the opportunity. On 23 April 2008, Vote for Gillian Tidd.
