Election 2008

Arrun Wilkie

Arrun Wilkie is a candidate standing for election in the West district.

Arrun Wilkie

Arrun Wilkie.

I've always had an interest in local politics and I feel passionately about preserving our island way of life. The states seem to have got their priorities muddled in past which we are all now paying for. I wanted to give the people of Guernsey the choice of a more balanced approach to government.

Diversifying our one legged economy has to be a priority. If the UK, European union, or America bring in anti offshore legislation we could see a sharp downturn in the finance industry. Our 0-10 growth policy would fail and our strategic reserve would be spent.

We should spend some real time & energy improving some of our traditional industries and some forward looking innovation to produce some new ones. For example Guernsey is sitting on a potential gold mine of epic proportions. Professor Peter Smith of Nottingham University who is an expert in the field of renewable energies has stated in a presentation that the tides around Guernsey and Alderney could produce if harnessed properly, the equivalent output of six nuclear power stations. We can sell that green energy back to the European grid at an enhanced rate.

I also want to see freedom of information legislation. Everybody on Guernsey should have access to how decisions are made on there be half.

The people of Guernsey should be given the choice of all forty five deputies and I would actively pursue island wide voting.

I'm a genuine person and I hope to bring that to the states. Personality politics has been damaging to the previous administration and it embarrasses the people of Guernsey. I want to work with my colleagues on the states on eradicating personality politics and create a government we can all be proud off. I will always question the system not represent it.
