Sam Maindonald.

Sam Maindonald

Sam Maindonald is a candidate standing for election in the St Sampsons parish.

My name is Sam Maindonald and I am standing in the St Sampson District.

I have served as a Deputy since November 2003. Additionally, I work as a Paralegal for a firm of Advocates.

The next four years are going to be some of the hardest that the States has had to face in a long time. To be able to deal competently with the challenges ahead, we need elected representatives with common sense, who are capable of thinking and acting strategically and who can deliver the work that needs to be done. I am that kind of Deputy.

Our Taxation Strategy is key to meeting the challenges we face in the future. I was the first Deputy to speak against the burden that would be placed on middle-income earners and the Public Sector as a result of the 0-10 Strategy. Whilst my concerns remain, to undo that decision now would be unacceptable. However, if we are to avoid economic instability and wish to build a sound foundation for long-term growth, we need careful and planned changes in order to spread the taxation burden more fairly. Our Taxation Strategy is not something we can tinker with on the floor of the House or in a manifesto. Any changes must be considered holistically and their impact properly assessed. To do otherwise will cause uncertainty and will lead to instability in our government and business community.

If elected, I will continue to support taxation policies that reduce the burden on middle-income earners and our Public Sector, whilst avoiding financial instability. This is important if we are to face the predicted financial recession. Guernsey’s economy must remain secure, both to protect our vital finance sector and our government.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require a copy of my manifesto.
