Election 2008

I'm David Gorvel and I love Guernsey. I am a Guernseyman through and through, passionate about the island and standing for Deputy because I believe I can make a difference for the better.

A member of a well-established farming family, I'm 58 years old, have been married to Sheila for 36 years and have two grown-up children and a granddaughter. For the past 24 years I have lived in the Forest parish.

I have served on the parish Douzaine for 11 years, including terms as Procureur and Constable. At present I am also a member of the Forest School Committee, National Trust of Guernsey, Guernsey Occupation Society and Guernsey Action Network.

My Aims

• To prioritise States expenditure and achieve greater flexibility and accountability – I believe that, especially in these tight economic times, we should be careful to spend wisely
• To tighten control on States departments themselves, making them more effective and cost-efficient
• To work towards more affordable housing
• To maintain and build on our existing health, education and social services
• To support senior citizens and lower-paid people at a time when there are ever-increasing demands on their income
• To be more proactive in our approach to recycling and refuse disposal – Guernsey should be leading the way in this, not lagging behind
• To protect our rural environment – land is at a premium over here and we must protect our rural heritage
• To support and maintain rural schools
• To encourage people to grow their own produce and buy local whenever possible
• To find a balance between controlling our population whilst supporting expansion within all business sectors represented on the island

I have the best interests of Guernsey at heart and I get things done. Anything else you'd like to know.
