Our island's long-term future must continue to take precedence over any short-term gain.

The world today doesn't feel it owes Guernsey a living; we have had to fight to preserve our current rights, liberties and lifestyle and to preserve jobs and maintain a strong economy, despite challenging events internationally.

I have been in the forefront of the battle for Guernsey’s future welfare and as a result I have had to be willing to take criticism head-on, especially in my role as Treasury & Resources Minister.

The focus of the States in the last few years has been on maintaining sustainable economic growth by responding calmly and sensibly to international pressures in order to protect and enhance our economy.

So far we have achieved this, but there is no room for complacency. Our future prosperity will continue to be down to our own efforts and tenacity.

At the Treasury my team have led the way on public sector expenditure control by delivering capital projects on time and under budget, together with four States budgets that have seen a greater percentage spent on the priorities of health, education, and law and order than ever before.

One in five households in our parish contain at least one member with a health problem. Over the next 20 years that figure is likely to double in line with the rise in the overall number of our senior citizens.

Support for our increasingly ageing population is therefore both essential and challenging. That’s why I put health spending next to education at the top of any priority list.

With strong, dedicated and principled political leadership from team players, I believe we will be able to maintain our economic success and ensure more people benefit from it.
