Election 2008You are in: Guernsey > States of Guernsey > Election 2008 > Jane Stephens ![]() Jane Stephens, St Sampsons Candidate. Jane StephensJane Stephens is a candidate standing for election in the St Sampsons parish. 1. Why vote for me as a representative of St. Sampson's Parish?I have lived in St. Sampson's or just over the border in the Vale for over 30 years and moved here when I married into a St. Sampson’s family of growers, farmers and builders. I have worked in education in the Island for many years and as a civil servant. I support my husband in our family business. If elected my work, as a Deputy, will be my full time occupation. 2. What do I want from the States of Deliberation and what will I work to achieve?• Value for Money in Government Activity. Value, not just in terms of capital spending but across the whole range of Government and client services. Spending must be monitored and reported on and the quality of service scrutinized. The Government Business Plan is a beginning of a structured approach but needs to be more than a wish list. • Fair and Equal Opportunities for all. Zero 10 is necessary but will need fine-tuning. Financial obligations of taxation should not unfairly disadvantage small businesses or individuals. • Access to information. The States and Government Departments must share information about what they are doing and why. The next House will have to face the challenge of openness and accountability. • Legislation that will Sustain the Island as a commercial centre whilst preserving the benefits of living in Guernsey. The finance sector is vital to our survival as is the contribution of every local business and employed person in Guernsey. We must balance population numbers against the need for workers. Solutions to waste management, carbon emissions and the challenges of global warming and climate change are urgent considerations for our politicians, as are the need for housing and sites for industry.
