Election 2008

Before you can vote you must have registered to vote, this process closed on 31 January.

Every person registered to vote should receive a card telling them when and where to vote and then on election day, April 23, you can go to the polling station where the staff will check your name and address to confirm you are on the electoral roll.

The staff at the polling station will then give you a ballot paper embossed with an official mark.

On the paper will be the names of all the candidates and the number of people you can vote for.

In each district you can vote for a different number of people :-

Castel - 7
The South East - 6
St Peter Port North - 7
St Peter Port South - 6
St Sampsons - 6
The Vale - 7
The West - 6

You then take the paper and go into a polling booth so that no-one can see how you vote and put a cross (X) in the box next to the person or persons you wish to vote for.

If you write anything else on the paper or put ticks in the boxes your vote may not be counted.

Once you've marked your vote, fold the ballot paper in half and put it into the ballot box.

If you are not entirely sure what to do, then you can always ask the staff at the polling station to help you.

The only exception is that if you have applied for a postal vote, then you must vote by post.
