The Opening Ceremony

The Opening Ceremony of the 2007 Island Games was an extravaganza of Greek history.

The twelfth Island Games have been officially opened at a three hour long ceremony in an ancient stadium in the Greek island of Rhodes.

Athletes from Guernsey were among those from 24 other island nations participating in the event.

The Chairman of the International Island Games Association Brian Partington joked a new games record had been set for the longest opening ceremony - lasting more than 3 hours - in the games history.

After the teams spent an hout filing into the two thousand year-old stadium, a ninety minute dramatic presentation based on Greek mythology was performed.

A dramatic light and dance display was greeted enthusiastically by an audience whose attention was beginning to wane.

The event concluded with the traditional water ceremony and the swearing of the Island Games oath.

Sadly at almost 11 local time the stadium had all but emptied by then, as athletes left early to be ready for their sport.

Competition in 14 events continues until Friday.
