Alex's Blog - Day 4

In the fourth entry in his online diary from Rhodes, BBC Guernsey's Alex South has at last found something to impress him about the Greek Island.

Well, after not being impressed by Rhodes since arriving last Sunday, all of a sudden, I was made to eat a small piece of humble pie, after being shown round the 2000 year old amphitheatre that will host the opening ceremony.

Since the inception of the Island Games back in 1985, they have graced a number of different shores including the Isle of Man, Isle of Wight and of course our own fair island, Guernsey. While all the islands have brought their own qualities to the games none can match the history of this island.

The amphitheatre was constructed in 2 BC (I wont bother to crack a joke about it being the only venue finished) and was originally used as an athletics track and even received the Olympic flame en-route to Athens in 2004. Unfortunately there won't be any events held there, but the opening ceremony promises to be a fantastic spectacle.

Whilst I was there a massive stage was being erected as well as a number of ports for what I assume will be the home for various pyrotechnics. The Rehearsal is tonight so we will have a much better idea of what to expect on Saturday evening, one thing is for sure the athletes will be impressed. It's just a little bit more impressive than walking out at Footes lane.

The Guernsey team has finally arrived as well and already the toys are being thrown from various prams. Its being claimed the table tennis team is threatening to boycott the event of their hall is not air-conditioned.

To me I don't see the problem. Yes it's going to be hot but surely everyone knew that before flying out and if it's the same for everyone then what is the problem. I hope the team's management quickly put an end to this mini mutiny before it sours the pre-games build up.

Listen to Jack Mabire's interview with the technical director of the organising committee of the games John Pelidis, about the opening ceremony...
