Mixing the styles of old school hard rock and heavy metal, from the likes of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, with 1990's stoner rock, as pioneered in the mainstream by bands like Kyuss, Teaspoonriverneck have created a set of songs that take the listener on a spiritual journey from the shores of Guernsey through the deserts and swamps of the deep south of the USA. This self titled debut has a sound that really feels like it should be played from vinyl rather than plastic as it evokes a total mood of hot dry nights under the stars and dark and dingy bars the sort of which you'd expect to see in a Robert Rodriguez film. Within this desert rock sound the bass really stands out as king and Steven Lynch's is no exception as its slow grooves are the base upon which Brett Stewart's drums and Jon Langlois' deeply scuzzed up guitar are built up to complete a total package of hot and dry mood music. However, this doesn't mean that this is just music to sit around and get wasted on cheap whiskey and other less legal substances to, as a majority of the tracks also posses a groove and force that makes them great for dancing, as has been witnessed when seeing 'the neck' play live. ![]() Steven Lynch. This makes the record much more accessible than some of the more 'sludgy' material often associated with this genre and shows how the band have balanced the notions of stoner, psychedelia and hard rock to such great effect. While all the tracks on the disc are uniformly cracking four that stand out as real highlights are album opener 'Eaten By The Devil', 'Thanatoid Ripsnorter', 'Blonde Witch' which could be considered the records lead single (thanks to its early release via MySpace) and the short but scuzzy ode to that most famous of Guernsey nightspots 'Ribshacksupertwang'. On record all the songs work brilliantly and Teaspoonriverneck have really succeeded in making music that is good both to listen to at home and to dance to at a gig, which is something very impressive, as few bands at any level succeed in doing both of these things. last updated: 14/10/2008 at 11:31 You are in: Guernsey > Unsigned Bands > CD Reviews > Teaspoonriverneck - Teaspoonriverneck |
