Teaspoonriverneck at the Plough

Teaspoonriverneck get the rafters rumbling in the 'cosy' surroundings of The Plough on Saturday 23rd December 2006.

Upon first discovering The Plough, down Vauvert, my initial thought was 'How the hell are they going to fit a band in there?' My question was answered on Saturday night when I entered the pub to find the band crammed in up against the front window, next to the door.

Teaspo.

Teaspo.

That was about the only space for them as the place was absolutely packed, so much so the front of the audience were pretty much face to face with the band.

The band played exceptionally well, especially considering their apology of feeling 'a bit rough', their heavily groove filled hard rock really getting the energy in the room up.

Underpinned throughout by Erneck's rumbling bass lines the bands mix of the heavier end of late 80's/early 90's Seattle grunge sound and 1970's hard rock really had a strong groove to it.

Onriv.

This was backed up by Onriv's pounding drums, really locking the bands sound down and highlighting the talents of an, at first, unassuming but truly gifted and energetic drummer.

Teaspo's guitar at times soared over this forcefully rhythmic combination, making the solos sing. While at other times joining the rhythm to really hammer home the bands hard rocking swagger which, at times, reminded me of British metal greats Motörhead merging with Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains.

This old school hard rock sound mixed with grunge really served to form a great sound, which while it’s not the best music to dance to, really hammers itself home with a pounding rhythm and rock 'n' roll groove.

Erneck.

Ending the set with a punked up blast through Wizzard's festive favourite 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday' and Christmas presents for some lucky members of the audience the band really won over the assembled throng who forced the band into playing two encores (during a spontaneous rain of plastic spoons!).

Overall though the band seemed somewhat crammed into a corner (any more than a three piece wouldn't have fitted) but put on a great show for one of the busiest gigs I've attended in a while and it would just be great to see them play a venue with a little more space to allow the crowd to properly engage with the band.
