The Games Opening CeremonyBy Isla Blatchford A rainy start to this years Island Games as the Opening Ceremony takes place. It was a cool and rainy evening in Lerwick at the Clickimin Leisure Centre when the Eleventh Natwest Island Games officially got underway. Guernsey started the parade of athletes as it was the last island to host the event. Hundreds of waving cheery athletes soaked up the atmosphere as well as the rain. Considering the weather there was a good turnout from the spectators. And Sark didn't have the smallest team of the games as some might have expected, the island's six shooters outdoing Froya who only had two people in the parade and neither of them are actually competing in the games! The rain did put a dampener on the entertainment as the organisers decided to postpone that part of the ceremony due to the bad weather. The water ceremony was a bit of a scrum with all the island's water carriers going for it! Scotland's First Minister Jack McConnell officially opened the games and everyone was pretty pleased with that. All in all it went well but it's a shame that everyone who had put so much effort into the preparations couldn't manage to fix the weather for the evening! last updated: 13/10/2008 at 12:37 You are in: Guernsey > Island Games > Island Games 2005 > IG05 Games Results > The Games Opening Ceremony |
