A great startSunday was the first day of sporting action at the Island Games in Shetland. The first medal of the games for Guernsey came thanks to star cyclist Ann Bowditch, continuing a tradition she set at the games in Guernsey two years ago. Sadly for Ann who was defending a gold medal, this time round she was third in the women's time trial in a time of one hour eight minutes and 21 seconds. Bermuda's Lyne Patchett took gold. But with Ann's result, a ninth place from Caroline Wickham and eleventh from Sonia Dean is meant Guernsey also took team bronze. In the men's time trial the first Guernsey rider across the line was Veteran Graham Le Maitre in eleventh spot whilst Alderney's Paul Clark finished forty-second. AthleticsLee Garland won gold in the men's three thousand metre steeplechase in 9 minutes 24.44 so a successful defense of his 2003 title. In fact it's his fourth island games gold in that event now. Meanwhile 23 year old Steve Dawes also made it on to the podium taking bronze. It was a fantastic start for fifteen year old Gemma Tingay taking part in her first ever island games. She took bronze in the women's javelin. ![]() Sark's Nick Dewe and Stefan Roberts. SarkSark's team will be travelling home with at least two silver medals. In their first day of competition, Nick Dewe and Stefan Roberts missed out on the gold medal by one target in the Universal Trench Team event. Nick's pretty pleased with their start to the games. FootballIn the football, Guernsey's men started the defence of their 2003 gold medal by beating Orkney 3-0 at Cunningsburgh. Substitute Joby Bourgaize added to two first half strikes from Dominic Heaume and Neil Clegg. But despite the victory Steve Ogier, Guernsey Island Manager, was disappointed at the overall performance and hopes to see better from the team in their other matches ![]() Guernsey playing Orkney. Meanwhile an inexperienced Guernsey women's side were outclassed by one of the favourites Aland - going down 6-0. BowlsThere was competition in the Men's and Women's Four at the Indoor Bowls Centre in Lerwick. In the Men's Guernsey and Alderney are in the same group stage. Guernsey beat the Shetlands 22-10 and the Western Isles 34-9. Alderney weren't so successful losing 34-2 to the Shetland and 21-7 to the Western Isles. In the Women's Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney are joined by Ynys Môn. Guernsey beat Ynys Môn 30-5 and Alderney 21-6. Whilst Alderney drew with Jersey 20 all. Guernsey tops both group tables with 4 points. SquashIn the first day of the team event in Squash, Guernsey took on Shetland, Gibraltar and the Isle of Man beating them all 5-0 putting them top of the group table with 9 points. BadmintonIn the Badminton team event Guernsey had emphatic wins against St Helena and Orkney, beating both five matches to nil but had to work a little harder against the hosts, Shetland winning 3-2. Guernsey top the table with 3 points with Shetland lying in second place with 2 points. Table TennisGuernsey's Table Tennis players made history by white washing Jersey in their second group tie, winning all their matches on their way to a 7 nil win. Guernsey need victory over Greenland to guarantee a team semi final place. VolleyballA late start for the Guernsey team taking to the court at quarter past eight last night when they took on Saaremaa, the gold medal winners from two years ago. It was always going to be a tough match for our local boys but they gave it their best. They lost 3-0 but hopefully that first loss won't dampen their spirits too much as they take to the court for their second match, this time facing the Cayman Islands. SailingIn the Laser Standard Rig Darragh Lee currently lies 12th and Alan Harris is 15th. last updated: 13/10/2008 at 12:36 You are in: Guernsey > Island Games > Island Games 2005 > IG05 Games Results > A great start |
