The work to make a flume and divert water from the Chelt into Cox's meadow, done by Alcrow, has effectively created a damm across the Chelt Valley at the upstream end of Cox's meadow. The flume is only 2 feet wide and the first action when flooding occurs is that debris comes down the Chelt and blocks it. The water then backs up the valley. It is supposed to flow over a weir on the edge of the Chelt but that path is also blocked by banks, walls and fences set in concrete. Anyone understanding transport phenomena, will appreciate that the Chelt and Lillybrook are both impeded. Under extreme flood situations, the obstruction causes backing up of both rivers and higher river levels back up the Chelt valley. This damming of the Chelt has no doubt contibuted to several £million of flood damage to properties that would otherwise have been unaffected.
