John Ward leaves Cheltenham Town

Carlisle United have agreed a four-year deal to take John Ward to Brunton Park. Listen to our full interviews with Ward and Chairman Paul Baker and send a message with your thoughts.

A few things you might not know about Carlisle United

Manager Neil McDonald was sacked after just one match of the new League One season.

Back in August '07, Carlisle broke the club's record fee by paying £140,000 to sign Blackburn striker Joe Garner.

Their record transfer fee received is £1,500,000 from Crystal Palace for Matt Jansen (Feb '98).

The club have twice appeared at Wembley - both times in the Auto Windscreens Shield Final.

In June 2002, Carlisle United went into voluntary administration with debts of nearly £1 million.

Brunton Park pitch size is 117 yards x 72 yards.

Cheltenham Town slumped to another defeat last night at the hands of Port Vale, but to the shock of fans, news broke a few hours after the final whistle that was sure to completely dominate the post-match banter.

John Ward revealed that he was leaving the club to take charge of Carlisle United.

Shortly after the announcement was made, Ward spoke to BBC Gloucestershire. Click below to listen to the full interview.

At 11.30am on Wednesday 3 October, John Ward was officially unveiled in Cumbria. To listen to the press conference, click on the link below.

Ward will replace caretaker boss Greg Abbott, who has been in charge since Neil McDonald was sacked in August.

"We welcome John to his new role and wish him continued success," read a statement from Carlisle.

Assistant manager Keith Downing will take charge at Cheltenham, who have agreed a "substantial compensation deal" with their League One rivals.

Speaking on the BBC Radio Gloucestershire breakfast show, Chairman Paul Baker told Mark Cummings they did everything they could to keep John Ward and he also hinted at the size of the compensation deal with Carlisle.

Ward joined the Robins in 2003 and lead the club to promotion into League One last season.

However, his last game in charge was the 3-0 loss to Port Vale on Tuesday, a result which leaves Cheltenham languishing one place from bottom in the league.

However Carlisle are confident the 56-year-old can sustain their hopes for promotion into the Championship.

"John Ward will bring to Carlisle United the experience that is needed to push the club forward in future years, and build on the very solid base that has been established," read the club statement.

Former Cheltenham Town midfielder and BBC Gloucestershire expert summariser Russell Milton said that he wasn't surprised:

"The last couple of times he (John Ward) has been interviewed he has been very abrupt with his answers and a couple of things he has come up with I've thought 'ooh, I'm not sure about that.

"I think he's worked wonders. I don't think you can say anything bad about John and I don't think you can say anything bad about the board. It's just life - things change, things move on."

i wont miss john wards, 'oh its a hard place to go to, because were only a little club' rubbish! At least our Keith Downing is positive and doesnt blame anything but himself for the cr*p shown on the pitch!!

Robins through and through
John Ward = Bottler. Betraying bottler. Good b****y riddance, won't miss being bored by this self serving idiot. Lets hope the club now get someone in with some passion.

Peter Piper
John Ward like Steve Cotteril wants to manage a bigger club and he cannot be faulted for that. The Robins are a little team who are in a league higher than they should be.They will never have a bigger fan base because Cheltenham is not a football town and only have a little ground with very little scope to enlarge the capacity. If the Robins were in the Premier league they might fill the ground but as this will never happen they will just have to accept that managers and players will move on to bigger clubs. One thing they should do is stop giving their better players to bigger clubs for peanuts. Jose Marinho is out of work at present so why not make him an offer.I wish John Ward all the best for his future;I wonder how long he will last.

phil
good luck to him

Tim Nicholls
Hugely disappointed in the manner of his departure, surely his mind cannot have been on the game? Having said that, I do believe he had taken us as far as he could without investment, and up until about 3 weeks ago no-one had any complaints about the job he was doing, but the failure to attract players this summer had turned some fans against him. Thanks for the success John, was probably the right time to go, although it could have been handled better.

Chris Schwab
Keeping our little team in league one is probably the greatest achievement in the history of the club. Thank you for everything and I hope you fulfil your championship ambitions.

Steve
Thanks John for showing your true colours. Obviously the last two shambles of performances were while you were negogiating a pay rise at Carlisle. You could have acted with more dignity.

Paul Holroyd
His sudden exit should not let us forget John Ward did an excellent job for Cheltenham Town. The appointment of John Ward's successor is key to the clubs survival both in the short and long term. I hope the board look far and wide for a replacement who will bring experience, ambition and a proven track record to Whaddon Road
