Spotlight: Bryan Redpath

Back in 2005, Bryan Redpath was put under the spotlight by BBC Radio Gloucestershire. Now the new head coach at Gloucester Rugby, we thought you might like to see the questions again.

Q: How did you get introduced to your sport?
A: My older brothers, Craig and Andrew. They were both playing and I was six. It wasn't really a club, it was a seven-a-side tournament when I was brought up in a place called St. Boswells. I played for Keslo High School and then under-14s for Melrose Rugby Club.
Q: What was the first car you owned?
A: It was a Ford Escort 1100-something. I was 17 and it was £200.
Q: What makes you angry?
A: I'm generally quite a placid person. If it was from a sporting point of view then it's not respecting professional rugby enough. I played amateur - I was a joiner and worked on a building site, and played then I turned professional. What angers me is that some people think this job is hard, they don't really respect the fact that they've been given a talent and they should be really thankful for that.
Q: What was the naughtiest thing you did as a child?
A: Probably hitting a golf ball through the front window in our house while one of my parents was in the toilet. I was also bad for throwing stones when I was young - at anything and anyone!
Q: What will you do when you retire?
A: Ideally I was going to do some individual [coaching] with scrum halves and some TV stuff but then this opportunity [at Gloucester Rugby] came along so I just got on with it. I could have gone back [to joinery] but, after ten operations, I don't think my body would take it. Being a tradesman, you have to work hard to earn money so I knew if I went back to being a tradesman I would have to work harder, physically, than I would have had to do as a coach. That was never an option for me, really. I've got the tools in the cupboard and I still have play with them when I do a bit of work in the house.
Q: What mundane task do you struggle to deal with?
A: Ironing, I don't do ironing. I iron the cuffs and the collars then put a jumper on! I enjoy cooking, I don't mind hoovering but I must admit to ironing. Putting clothes away as well - ironing and putting the clothes away in drawers are things I can't get into for some reason.
Q: What's the most money you've ever won?
A: About fifty quid on a bandit - that's the most I've ever won.
Q: Which of your team-mates has the most annoying habit?
A: Most amusing is Terry Fanolua and Duncan McRae's Scottish impersonations during training, all saying 'laddie'. I wouldn't say it's something I find annoying, but I would say it's amusing and something I enjoy - especially Terry's.
