Cartoons come to life

Virtual band Gorillaz get to prove how good they can be in reality when they step in to replace U2 to headline opening night of Glastonbury 2010. Riding high on the success of their third album Plastic Beach, the collaborative effort led by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett wowed the large crowd at this year's Coachella Music Festival in California, literally bringing the cartoon band to life.

Featuring sublime pop smarts combined with an array of genres from electronic, to dub and hip hop, the cartoon band was first conceived by Albarn and Hewlett whilst watching MTV in the late nineties. That idea has gone on to produce three successful albums worldwide and provided a platform for Albarn to assemble an impressive list of musical collaborators. Plastic Beach is no exception, featuring the likes of De La Soul, Mos Def, Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of The Clash, Bobby Womack, Lou Reed, Snoop Dogg, Mark E. Smith, Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and the Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music.

Not only will their Glastonbury performance feature stunning visuals by Hewlett featuring the Gorillaz characters, but you can bank on an array of special guests turning up to delight the crowd in what will be Albarn's second year in a row headlining the Pyramid Stage.

THE GUARDIAN Friday 25 June

Gorillaz took a big risk standing in for U2 at Glastonbury. And with a set that failed to ignite the crowd in the same way that Blur did last year, it seems the gamble didn't pay off
