She may be in her mid-twenties, but Speech Debelle is both young and old beyond her years. Her fragile voice might make her sound like a vulnerable teenager, but her streetwise lyrics - honest, heartfelt and jaded - tell a different story.
Her debut album Speech Therapy is a heart-on-sleeve outpouring of emotion. Favouring all live production over sampled beats, it's not a conventional hip-hop record, but it hits mighty hard. But it's not all about soul-searching; Speech also has a real knack for picking out the funny little details of everyday life.
