In Britain's variable climate, grapes are more successful when grown under glass, especially if good dessert quality crops are intended. Growth may be trained up into the greenhouse roof, and established plants can carry as many as 100 bunches where there is space. Hard winter pruning and routine summer trimming is essential to keep the vigorous growth from competing with the fruit. Plants may need watering every week in hot weather. 'Muscat of Alexandria' is a popular amber-green variety, very reliable, with large firm fruits that are sweet, aromatic and juicy.
