Looking like a giant buttercup, trollius is a related genus with generally larger and more handsome flowers. In this variety, the flowers are golden yellow, unusually large at 8cm (3in) across, and appear earlier than other kinds. The plant needs moist conditions and is happiest in wet to boggy soil at pond margins, where it makes a later-blooming alternative to marsh marigolds, or in damp borders for early summer interest. It looks good with hostas, especially gold-variegated forms.
