Sidalcea resemble miniature hollyhocks, with clusters of upright stems bearing pink mallow-like flowers from early to late summer. The foliage is not affected by the rust that disfigures so many hollyhocks, nor do the plants freely self seed. The stems are strong and wiry, so do not need supporting. They grow best in sun but tolerate the light dappled shade that occurs where they are grown in crowded flowerbeds between other plants. The upright spikes team well with other summer flowers and create a useful contrast in shape. Fully hardy, sidalcea needs a sunny site with well-drained soil. Plants dislike winter wet, so mulch with bracken or straw when frost or snow is forecast. Cut stems back hard after flowering to encourage further blooms.
