The dawn redwood comes from the forests of Central China and is a deciduous conifer with a lovely conical shape. The soft bright green foliage turns a delicate reddish pink before falling in autumn to reveal the fluted orange bark. It should be grown as a specimen tree in large gardens or parks as it can reach 40m (130ft) tall. It has been given an Award of Garden Merit (AGM), which is for plants of outstanding excellence.
