Redcurrant

Redcurrants are easily grown fruits, once planted as hedges around herb and vegetable gardens. They crop well in sun or shade, and the same variety may be grown on south- and north-facing walls to give a succession of ripening dates. Plants develop a permanent system of fruiting sideshoots, and may be trained as fans, espaliers, cordons and standards, as well as bushes. Grow all kinds on a single clear stem, or leg, for easy maintenance. 'Raby Castle' is a fine old variety from 1820, still grown today for its high quality fruits. Net against birds and squirrels.
