Trailing petunias, once listed as forms of P. pendula, used to be available only as seed strains, although keeping plants over winter for spring cuttings was traditional practice with all petunias. Now an increasing number of trailing hybrids are available as plants for growing in baskets and window-boxes, and also for edging beds and tubs. The large-flowered Surfinia Series is perhaps best known, but multiflora types, such as 'Purple Wave', with smaller and more numerous blooms, make luxuriant cascades of branching stems, smothered in colour.
