The blue-green foliage of this edible perennial is stronger in taste than chives but milder than the cultivated onion. Creamy-white flowers appear in the early summer of its second season, and the leaves can be harvested on a 'cut and come again' basis. The plant likes plenty of sun, performing best in slightly alkaline soils (but tolerating most).
