The most popular of rock plants, aubrietas are reliable plants that form wide carpets of colour in late spring and early summer. 'Elsa Lancaster' has purple flowers which are held in small bunches above unusual plump foliage. Choose a planting site carefully as it's quite a vigorous growing plant that can swamp slower growing species. Aubrietas look superb grown on a dry stone wall where the plants can cascade down over the edges - plant a mixture of varieties to give a multicoloured effect.
