A large, columnar tree from eastern USA, with spiky, grey-green leaves that are fragrant when crushed. Its juvenile foliage has spiky leaves in contrast with older leaves that lie flat on its branches. Brown-violet, glaucous fruit ripen in autumn providing the plant with seasonal interest. This plant makes a good specimen tree but requires room to reach maturity.
