A delightful variety of the pineapple flower, the leaves and bracts of 'Sparkling Burgundy' are tinged an unusual burgundy colour. There are only a few eucomis species, all South African and doubtfully hardy except in warm gardens, where they may be planted in sheltered sunny beds against a warm wall. They are quite easy to grow and are guaranteed to attract attention throughout July and August. Plant bulbs in large pots in spring and move outside once all danger of frost has passed. Plants in pots should be watered frequently in dry weather, kept dry all winter and then repotted in spring.
