Silver Gilt Flora Medal
Shinglesea

Design inspiration

Chris O'Donoghue"During the early 1900s, redundant Victorian railway carriages were installed as holiday homes at Winchelsea Beach, near Hastings in East Sussex.

"The backdrop of Shinglesea is a replica of the side of one of these carriages, with a corrugated iron roofed veranda. I've used drought-resistant plants such as Crambe maritima, Armeria maritima, Euphorbia characias and santolina with impact provided by rich red poppies growing through tall grasses. Pebbles will cover the ground and a pine tree and tamarisk as well as an old wooden dinghy will establish the location, all viewed through a rustic chestnut fence."

Designer, Chris O'Donoghue
