Circular lawn

A circular lawn pushes out the boundaries in every direction, especially if you can't quite see where the edges stop and start. This shape is a good choice for a very small garden or where you want an easily-achieved designer look.

You will need

• wooden peg
• spade
• wheelbarrow
• string line
• lump hammer
• lawn edging iron
• spray can (the kind that is used for marking out and works upside down) - you can also use sand, rope, a hose pipe or anything flexible enough

Step by step

• Start by closely cutting the lawn with a mower, this will make life easier when marking out and lifting the turf.
• Mark out the perimeter – this can be done by finding the centre of the lawn and knocking in a small stake. Take a line out from this point and tie the spray can to the end. Pull the line tight and spray on the boundaries.
• Using an edging iron cut through the boundary line.
• Remove the unwanted lawn surface using a spade.
• Start plotting the rest by taking measurements from the house and gradually work across the garden.
• Don’t let the turf go to waste. Stack this and leave to decompose, it will make perfect loam that can be reused in the garden later.
