Track Record: First heard in the radio versions of The Day Today and Knowing Me, Knowing You, Patrick Marber changed tack in the mid-90s with a couple of highly successful West End plays: Dealer's Choice and Closer. He adapted the latter for the big screen - receiving a BAFTA nomination for his troubles - and has also penned two more adaptations: Asylum and Notes On A Scandal. The latter stars Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett, and will be directed by Richard Eyre. Asylum will be released at the tail-end of 2005.
Go Figure: Marber was 23 when he started attending Gamblers Anonymous classes - the addiction served him well on the poker-themed Dealer's Choice.
UK OK? His debut feature, Closer, was actually a Hollywood production.
Yes, Really: After telling director Mike Nichols that the movie version of Closer featured four very beautiful people, Nichols replied: "Yeah, that's what movies are. Movies are beautiful people suffering."
