Hello there again. Well: I am not feeling too ill this time, which makes a first for a video diary from me and a potential chance to find out if this will curse me and I'll be extremely ill by the next one. All films have curses, like The Exorcist and The Omen and the rest, I am sure... so I believe I am cursed too. Even though I have never made anything supernatural.
Anyway, WE HAVE A TITLE FOR THE ROAD MOVIE!!! It's called Where We Come From. Thanks for anyone who has sent in suggestions and that, but sorry, I got ahead of the game and chose one in the end, from way back. (For the person who suggested Homeward Bound, I actually have a little dog in my film but he gets squashed by a car!)
"I LOVE THE GENEROSITY OF ACTORS"
I am currently gearing up to start some workshops for Where We Come From and am looking forward to working with the casting director and the cast in developing the screenplay into something worth shooting by the end of the year.
I love the generosity of actors: as can be seen in this video diary, which is about what improvisation can mean and how me and Steve get the most out of our collaboration with Mark Devenport (who starred in One For The Road).
Steve is busy on the first draft of World Of Pain, the regional wrestling psychodrama/comedy, and it's epically long. I have the cushy director-based job of reading it and um-ing and ah-ing about this and that and making silly little notes in the margin and asking if characters can be taller, smaller, shorter, or older, etc.
The local short film festival (www.bangshortfilmfestival.com) is gearing up for a weekend screening. There's some really good stuff, from no-budget to low-budget, real leftfield stuff, like mad animation about rabbits and dolls and creepy ghost stories like To His Knees He Fell, which I always plug - nothing to do with the fact that I was one of the camera operators on it. Anyway, if you are in or around Nottingham on 29-30th January, then why not pop along to the Broadway Cinema and see some new stuff from great first time and up-and-coming filmmakers. You know it makes sense.
Hooray! I am in a BAFTA-nominated film! It's a short by my friend Annie Watson, Knitting A Love Song, and I play a camp, chain-smoking PE teacher. While I think the Baftas are dodgy, American-sucking and that film shouldn't be a competitive sport... I HOPE SHE WINS/HAS ALREADY WON (depending on when you read this - God, I am a hypocrite!).
This is maybe because I have given up smoking and am stressed out. For a fat, overweight old bloke who is a stressy so and so, I am pleased to say that it's nearly two weeks now: though I can't sleep properly, can't focus and my work is all over the place, I still think it's the right thing to do. I did all the things they tell you not to in the new year - join a gym, etc. Ha! Me versus fags. I am winning... so far.
I hope to report in the next diary that: 1) I am well; 2) I am still not smoking; 3) Our scripts haven't changed titles and we are sane; and 4) the discovery of Atlantis... or something. See you soon.
