Daniel Day-Lewis erupts onto the screen in the adventure film "The Last of the Mohicans", a movie that transformed him into a big-screen heartthrob. Popular on release, plenty will enjoy watching it again courtesy of a quality DVD release.
Sweeping scenery dominates the Michael Mann-directed movie, and it's good to see this superior action adventure in widescreen, especially when it's been so well transferred to disc.
The movie won an Academy Award for 'Best Sound', and Warner Bros. has seen fit to give it the 5.1 mix treatment - and what a delight it is too. Forest scenes carry lovely rear ambient effects like bird twitter, while the fast-paced battle scenes allow all the speakers to come alive with the thunder of furious conflict.
Apart from a trailer, the extra feature for this DVD is an isolated 5.1 mix of Trevor Jones' and Randy Edelman's music score. While the mix is very good, the periods of silence are annoying, and the cheap synthesiser samples that are meant to represent an orchestra sound very obvious. Not only that, but you'll soon realise that Jones didn't make much of an effort to vary his strikingly similar score for "Cliffhanger".
