Robert De Niro's directorial debut of Chazz Palminteri's thoughtful gangster script debuts on Region 2 DVD with little fanfare.

Presented in fullscreen ratio, this is a lazily cropped image. Just watch what happens to the Rank gong at the beginning, as it clumsily 'pans' onto the gong, cutting out the arm! Daytime scenes look fine, but any darker moments are often quite grainy, and the print is clearly dirty in the racetrack sequence.

The 2.0 sound mix is fine, with atmospherics mixing quite pleasantly in the background.

While marginally better than the VHS release, this is not a definitive release of this film. It may be worth waiting to see if Universal release a Collector's Edition along the lines of the Region 1 HBO disc, with 5.1 sound and widescreen picture.
