So, as well as folk music, poetry and comedy at Latitude this year, the booming British grime scene was also well represented too.

The likes of DJ Semtex and AJ Tracey were in the house (well tent, actually) but it was perhaps Nadia Rose and her 'skwod' that stole the show.

And they weren't even on the bill!

The Croydon rapper - and cousin of Stormzy - filled in for late dropout Novelist and got the Film and Music Arena bouncing with some riotous renditions of tracks off her 2017 debut EP Highy-Flammable.

On stage 'Nads' said "it was a good fee, so we're here!" Cha ching.

Backstage, sipping Champagne, she revealed: "I was in the studio - mixing my next single and my agent called. So we came down.

"It was sick - it was our first time here - by chance, but really fun."

She added: "It was our second time playing Glasto a few weeks ago.

"We watched it back a few times and it looked as fun as it was!

"It seems to be an organic rise."

    Nadia Rose
    Image caption,

    Organic rise

Ellie Goulding recently pointed to the lack of women on festival bills, which Nadia herself has noticed but is unconcerned about.

"In comparison to the guys on the lineup, there's a clear difference.

"But as time is going on, there's more women feeling like they can do and coming out and doing it.

"I don't think we're in a bad place now - things are moving along nicely."

Miss Rose hopes to drop her new EP in October, with a full length album set to arrive in 2018.

And while she describes the EP's as fun, the 24-year-old promises the forthcoming album wlll be "a body of work."

"That's when you get to delve into me properly.

"I'm not even grime. I mean, I do grime but that's not who I am. I'm always looking to do things differently."

Finally, in case you wondered who Nadia would call up last minute to save her own festival lineup then the likes of J Hus, Eminem, Drake, Rihanna and of course her cuz all get the nod. As well as Sophie Ellis Bexter.

    "I love a Soph!"

Who knew? Leave your phone on Sophie.

  3. Gentlemen of the Road: Introducing...Baaba Maalpublished at 14:19 BST 17 July 2017

    Baaba Mal

Earlier we told you how Mumford and Sons took over Latitude with their Gentlemen of the Road show on Saturday night (scroll down)

One such gentleman Baaba Maal performed three tracks on stage with the band, as well as a Beatles classic with the entire cast at the end.

The Senegalese performer featured on the band's recent Johannesburg mini album (below), after a friend of the of the Mumfords saw him playing at The Blues of the River festival in his West African homeland.

Chances are you may even have seen him play at Glastonbury yourself, as he says he's played there four or five times.

Speaking before the show the 63-year-old spoke of his love of the "ambience" of British festivals and his admiration for the headline act.

He said: "When we did the album, everyone was surprised that it worked really well together.

"But you can see when they get on the stage that they are real musicians. Different from me but music is about curiosity.

"Hopefully this opens a lot of doors for African musicians, not just me."

He also stressed his belief that music is an important tool in helping people to communicate in modern day Africa.

"Generally when you think music, you don't always think politics.

"But in Africa it has to be, because the music is there to communicate what we think is right. Especially the young musicians in the hip hop scene; they are very engaged in taking off the barrier and talking to people and saying 'stand up for this - and not that'.

"It's our country, we need to say what we need to say."

    Baaba Maal

Baaba describes the political situation in Senegal as "exciting" due to to the upcoming elections and feels that modern African music "has the right" to embrace the latest technology.

"Some people think that African music should stay pure, but it has the right to use new modern technology and new beats that the young producers are coming up with.

"It works really well with African music, if you know how to blend it.

"We have powerful music, powerful drums, energetic dancing and we need to connect with the rest of the world."

He added: "My music is the result of all the traditional legacy but also lots of rhythms, melodies and harmonies from all kinds of music I've heard on my travels."

Baaba's latest album is in fact called The Traveller, in reference to his recent globe-trotting while on tour.

Here's the gentleman himself below giving us his top tips on how to travel well. It's all about bringing something back (and he doesn't mean from duty free).

  5. "Holy Grail" of Prince bootlegs leakspublished at 13:53 BST 17 July 2017

    PrinceImage source, Getty Images

The contents of Prince's vault remain shrouded in mystery - but there's one song fans thought they'd never get to hear.

Wally, recorded in 1986 during sessions for Sign O The Times, has long been considered Prince's lost masterpiece.

Recorded on the day he broke up with Susannah Melvoin, the twin sister of The Revolution's Wendy Melvoin, it was no sooner finished than the star ordered it be erased.

Here's how his engineer Susan Rogers described the song to the BBC in 2015.

    Quote Message

He came into studio and recorded this ballad. It starts with spoken word. Prince is speaking to Wally, a dancer in his crew. He's telling him, "I want go out tonight and meet someone new." He goes into this chorus. It's beautiful, just beautiful. There's a crescendo. The song gets huge. It breaks down. He says, "I'm not going out any more." The background vocal arrangements, the expression of it was just gorgeous. Of course he played all the instruments. We finished recording the song and then Prince said to me, "Erase it." He said it very calmly. I could feel the fan in me screaming "No!" I said, "Think about it. Wait til tomorrow at least." He reached over and hit record. He erased it. It was gone.

    Susan Rogers

So fans were bursting with glee when the song appeared online over the weekend. It appears that the leak is a later version of Wally, featuring horn players Eric Leeds and Atlanta Bliss - but Prince's anguish and vulnerability are still imprinted on the song.

For obvious reasons, we can't link to it here... But the mere proof of its existence is worth mentioning.

And who knows? If Prince's estate sorts out the legal mess over his unreleased recordings, one day we might get to hear the studio-quality version.

  6. Fugees distance themselves from leaked unreleased trackpublished at 13:28 BST 17 July 2017

    FugeesImage source, Getty Images

Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michael, formerly known as The Fugees have all taken to social media to distance themselves from a 'new' Fugees track which was played on US hip hop station Hot 97.

The song appeared on Funkmaster Flex's show and though a bit rough around the edges is a nice reminder of how great they sounded together.

Head to hip hop magazine XXL, external to hear the track.

The group disbanded in 1997 though they have played some reunion dates since then.

All three musicians took to Twitter to say that any rumours of a fresh hook up are premature...

  8. Loyle Carner plays 'best show of my life' at Latitudepublished at 12:43 BST 17 July 2017

Aside from the headliners, the biggest buzz around an act at Latitude this year appeared to be over South London rapper and all round good guy Loyle Carner.

Not only can he rap like Kanye and sample great soul/gospel music but he loves his mum - having brought her on stage at Glastonbury - and even spends his spare time teaching kids with ADHD to cook.

    What more do you want?

He absolutely packed out the BBC Music Stage tent on Sunday evening for one of the rowdiest scenes of an otherwise relaxed and chilled out weekend.

Near the start of the show, the Brixton boy pointed out that the previous year he had watched on enviously as his pals - Kentish punk duo Slaves - filled the same space, with him playing a smaller stage, but "now we're here".

By the end he looked right at home up there (so much so that he even brought his own armchair) and declared "Latitude - this is the best show I've ever played in my life. Thank you."

We found him chilling on his tour bus before the show, after a little kick about with a football, and he seems to be taking his rapid rise in his stride.

"We're getting there bit by bit. A lot of things have come full circle.

"Bringing my mum on stage at Glasto was probably the highlight so far but it wasn't properly planned.

"It was important for me, as she wrote a poem at the end of my album and it felt nice to give her the applause that her writing deserved.

"A friend said that there were a lot of guys crying, which is important for people to show how they feel."

    Loyle Carner
    Image caption,

Ultimate sacrifice: Liverpool fan Loyle in his dad's Cantona shirt

Loyle also carries an Eric Cantona shirt on stage with him at every gig, in honour of his late Manchester United-supporting dad. A gesture which the 22-year-old rapper describes as the "ultimate sacrifice" - as he supports United's bitter rivals Liverpool.

Now, after smashing Glasto and playing the best show of his life at Latitude, next stop is a grand homecoming gig at Brixton Academy on his 23rd birthday in October.

If his mum lets him that is (and he doesn't get too drunk!)...

"I spent a lot of time around there growing up so it's a big deal for me.

    Quote Message

I was supposed to see Kanye West there but my mum wouldn't let me go because someone got shot near there.

"We'll find out closer to the time if she'll let me go for my own gig. She might forbid me."

He added: "I've never actually been to a gig there, but I do remember going to the break dancing B Boy World Championships in 2009.

"I love the idea of playing gigs in South London where I'm from but never thought I'd play the Academy. It's unreal man.

"It will be a special night as a lot of people from around there hopefully feel the same as me. I've just got to make sure i don't get too drunk as it's my birthday - we've got a show the next night!"

Watch Loyle perform at Glastonbury here.

  11. 'Neighbourliness is a beautiful thing' say Mumford & Sonspublished at 11:03 BST 17 July 2017

    Paul Glynn
    Music News LIVE reporter

Mumford and SonsImage source, Matt Eachus

The 1975 performed their first ever festival headline set at Latitude on Friday night and Fleet Foxes - up against DJ Fatboy Slim - played their first UK gig in five years on Sunday but Saturday was all about Mumford and Sons as their Gentlemen of the Road show rolled into Suffolk.

The band took over the festival for the evening by getting on the phone and inviting a star-studded cast of musical friends to perform, including Baaba Maal, Leon Bridges, Lucy Rose, Two Door Cinema Club and Maggie Rogers - with whom the Mumfords are apparently "obsessed".

Singer Marcus Mumford, talking to the BBC before the show, said the Gentlemen of the Road 'stopovers' - which have taken place in "towns where people don't usually tour" across America, Australia, South Africa and the UK - are all about "neighbourliness".

"We've never needed it more," he added.

"The idea of congregation is a very beautiful and ancient one. The relational magic that can happen in a field in front of a sound system with people who are all there for a similar purpose is a beautiful thing.

"You hear cool stories of people meeting for the first time or re-connecting with old friends. There often comes a time in our set when we say 'why not turn to someone you don't know and say hello!'

    Marcus MumfordImage source, Ben Gibson
    Quote Message

The idea of neighbourliness is a beautiful thing too and we've never needed it more - so the more of that the better.

"Gentlemen of the Road is all about Collaboration, so this is the ultimate collaboration with Latitude."

True to his word, their set on Saturday ended with the aforementioned Maal, Bridges, Rogers, Rose and more joining them on stage to sing a rousing rendition of The Beatles With a Little Help From My Friends - evoking images of Joe Cocker, external at one of the original and iconic neighbourly festivals Woodstock.

We'll bring you more from another Gentleman of the Road Baaba Maal later.

    Mumford & SonsImage source, Latitude

Melvin Benn, MD of Festival Republic who run the festival, which welcomed 40,000 people to Henham Park this year, said: Latitude 2017 has been one of the best, and most certainly the biggest Latitude yet.

"Yet again, I’m blown away by our Latitude audience, who were treated to the finest in music, arts, theatre, comedy and literature. I can’t wait to see you all again next year.”

Freddie Mercury and Rami MalekImage source, Reuters

The long-awaited biopic of the British rock group Queen is apparently going ahead after years of false starts.

A statement on their website, external reads: "Yes folks, it IS finally happening.

The statement adds that Queens show-stealing performance at Live Aid in 1985 will be recreated.

Mr Robot actor Rami Malek has signed on to play Freddie Mercury, though other casting is yet to be announced.

“Rami has great presence and he’s utterly dedicated to the project. He’s completely living and breathing Freddie already, which is wonderful," said the band.

Pre-production begins next week in the UK with principal photography in London from September.

From the Pyramid stage in Glastonbury to sitting around a campfire, Ed Sheeran will sing just about anywhere.

It's the latter location which has just everyone talking this morning as he has appeared as a soldier in Game of Thrones.

He sings a little ditty about a woman's hands being warm (not quite as creepy as it sounds), in Dragonstone, the first episode of the show's seventh series.

When one of GoT's main characters Arya Stark rides past, she tells him: "It's a pretty song, I've never heard it before."

"It's a new one," Sheeran replies in his best acting voice.

"Sing Galway Girl, then," she answers. "Cool," he fires back*
