Women's ability to focus on a task did not seem to be disrupted by music

Here's a bit of scientific controversy now - a new bit of research has suggested women are better than men at concentrating when music is playing.

And rock music is particularly distracting for us lads apparently.

The new study, examining whether music impairs or enhances the ability to focus on a task, has been carried out by a team from Imperial College and the Royal College of Music.

Test subjects were played music into headphones while trying to play the Operation board game.

The studies also suggest that...hang on is that a bit of Tame Impala I can hear? Big Tune. Love that guitar riff. Erm, yeah. Where were we again? Oh the study...

  6. Fatboy Slim: Ravers are "a hardy, tenacious bunch'published at 14:19 GMT 12 December 2016

    BBC 6 Music

Fabric in London may have won a reprieve but the fact remains that the clubbing scene, in so far as venues are concerned, is diminishing.

In August last year, figures showed nearly half the UK's nightclubs shut their doors in 10 years.

It's raised concerns about more illegal warehouse raves.

But DJ and musician Fatboy Slim has told 6 Music that clubbers are a "hardy tenacious bunch" who will "find somewhere to party".

Speaking ahead of his massive show at the O2 in London on Saturday, he insisted that although safety comes first - ravers will find a way to keep the scene going.

  14. Hamilton mixtape tops US chartpublished at 11:32 GMT 12 December 2016

    HamiltonImage source, PA

You already know whose No.1 on these shores (because we just told you) but now the all-star compilation album The Hamilton Mixtape has topped the US chart.

The album was inspired by the hit Broadway stage show Hamilton: An American Musical and features covers of songs from the show.

The list of artists on there reads like a who's who of modern music featuring The Roots, Busta Rhymes, Alicia Keyes, Sia, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, Andra Day and Wiz Khalifa, to name just a few.

The show's writer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda told us earlier this month: "One of the great things to come out of Hamilton is we met our heroes: Busta Rhymes, Common, John Legend, Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah.

"To have them come to the show afforded us an opportunity to say, 'What does this in turn inspire you to make?'".

We know the answer now - a chart-topping album...

  15. Listen again to Noel G & Bob D on 6 Musicpublished at 11:10 GMT 12 December 2016

There was some pretty good listening on 6 Music over the weekend, but in case you missed it here's a couple of our highlights.

Noel Gallagher was in the building on Friday for his now annual pre-festive drop in with Steve Lamacq.

The Chief spoke to Lamo about the new Oasis rock-umentary Supersonic among other things and brought along a bag of weird and wonderful records too, as well as his razor-sharp wit as standard.

Now we know that Noel is a big Bob Dylan fan. He might well know all the words to A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall (sorry Patti, we love you really).

So this one is for you Noel; a chance to listen again to one of Bob's Theme Town Radio Hour series, after he was given the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Let's all campaign for a Noel & Bob Christmas special next year, shall we? Working title: *Live Forever Young.

    *Quite pleased with that one.

  16. Rolling Stones score first number one album in 22 yearspublished at 10:26 GMT 12 December 2016

    Rolling StonesImage source, PA

Mick Jagger had a BIG week last week didn't he?

The 73-year-old rocker might need a lie down today, as after becoming a dad again for the eighth time on Thursday, him and his band of merry men went straight back to the top of the album charts after we left you on Friday.

Blue and Lonesome, their new covers record, gave them their first 12th number No.1 album and first in over two decades, after notching up 106,000 combined sales across all platforms.

Last week's number one - Glory Days by Little Mix - has dropped to number three this week.

The Official Charts Company said 95,000 of the Stones' album sales were physical, so chances are it could be coming your way in Christmas wrapping soon! If you've been good this year that is.

  17. Matt Terry wins The X Factorpublished at 10:10 GMT 12 December 2016

    Matt TerryImage source, PA

Right well we know that millions of you tuned in on Saturday night, but this will still be news to the rest of you - Matt Terry is this year's X Factor champion.

Previous winners of recent years have included Little Mix, Leona Lewis and James Arthur, so we'd suggest that you remember the name.

Matt beat Saara Aalto in the final of the singing competition and was then joined onstage by his former competitors as he performed his first single, When Christmas Comes Around.

Matt Terry wins X Factor 2016

Last night, the Official Chart Company tweeted that,, external unusually, Matt's single will not have a physical release on CD - could this harm his chance of making a Christmas number one?

“You don’t see many CD singles in the supermarket – but X Factor winners have often found a home amongst the sprouts and Ferrero Rocher. Impulse purchases from the show’s viewers, many of whom don’t buy a lot of music, have often given the winner’s single huge lead in the charts," says music reporter Mark Savage.

“That changed last year when Lousia Johnson scored the lowest-selling debut of any X Factor winner, selling just 39,196 copies of Forever Young (3,545 of those came from streams)."

    Quote Message

“The move to a digital-only release makes sense this time round. Not only does it avoid the embarrassing problem of unsold CDs sitting on the shelves for months – but Matt Terry’s song has been written by Ed Sheeran, who’s responsible for two of Spotify’s top five most-streamed songs of all time.”

Louis Tomlinson from One Direction appeared on Saturday's Final show alongside DJ Steve Aoki to perform their new single Just Hold On, only days after losing his mum, Johannah Deakin, to leukaemia at the age of 43.

The show's head judge Simon Cowell paid a glowing tribute to an emotional Louis for his "bravery", telling him that "you've done her proud."

  18. Nobel effort from Patti Smith with Bob Dylan tributepublished at 09:36 GMT 12 December 2016

First up today, punk, poet and singer-songwriter Patti Smith looked genuinely mortified when she stumbled over the lyrics to Bob Dylan's A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall at the Nobel Prize ceremony at the weekend.

The singer-songwriter was there to pay tribute to Dylan who was absent due to a prior gig.

"I'm sorry," she told the audience in Stockholm, Sweden, "I'm really nervous."

Bless. There are a lot lyrics after all. Patti did give an amazing performance, external in the end.

For his part, in a pre-prepared speech read out by the US ambassador in Sweden, Dylan said it was "truly beyond words" to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.

"If someone had ever told me that I had the slightest chance of winning the Nobel prize, I would have to think that I'd have about the same odds as standing on the moon," he said.
