Stars have been lining up to pay tribute to Leonard Cohen with Sir Elton John, external calling him "a giant of a man and a brilliant songwriter".

But his ability to stay humble shone through in every interview, here he is talking to Radio 2's Steve Wright in 2007.

If you've been with us all day you've probably already heard Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah, Alexandra Burke's "Whitney-esque" re-working of the same song on The X Factor and The Last Shadow Puppets sprawling live version of Is This What You Wanted?

But there have been plenty more attempts at covering Mr Cohen down the years by a host of different major artists.

Of course Lana Del Del Rey has had a pop. Why wouldn't she? But have you heard Nina Simone cover Cohen's Suzanne? And what about REM?

Kent-based musical duo The Webb Sisters, comprised of siblings Charley and Hattie Webb, were first asked to perform as backing singers for Leonard Cohen when he toured in 2008 and went on to continue playing live with him until 2013.

They said his nickname of 'The Godfather of Gloom' couldn't be farther from the truth.

"He was always the first to make an unexpected hilarious joke," they told BBC News.

Leonard has plenty of uber-fans in high musical places it seems.

Alex Turner and Miles Kane aka The Last Shadow Puppets certainly fit that description.

Here they are covering Cohen's Is This What You Wanted, external from his 1974 album New Skin for the Old Ceremony, in front of a rather giddy (shall we say) Dublin crowd this summer.

Songwriting was a personal and involved art for Leonard Cohen and Hallelujah took him three years and 70 drafts to complete.

It's a song that has been covered no fewer than 500 times but Hallelujah producer John Lissauer tells BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the record company thought "it was un-releasable".

"They (Columbia) hated it and they didn't release it and it ended my career as a record producer at the time with their artists."

Leonard Cohen as "almost too great", singer Frank Turner has said.

Speaking on the Victoria Derbyshire show earlier, Frank - who regularly performs a cover version of Leonard's Chelsea Hotel at live shows - called him the "old testament of songwriters".

Alexandra Burke and music journalist Alan Light remember how three different versions of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah came to chart in the UK at the same time.

The X Factor star had a Christmas number one in 2008 with her cover, external, which was her first single after winning the reality show.

But a backlash from fans of Jeff Buckley saw his version rise to number two in the charts and the debate then sparked a return to the hit parade for Leonard's original.

Good morning.

We begin today with the sad news that Canadian singer Leonard Cohen has died aged 82.

The news was announced, external on his official Facebook page, but no details about the cause of death were given.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau led tributes.

"It is with deep sorrow that I learned today of the death of the legendary Leonard Cohen," Mr Trudeau said in a statement, external.

The singer, whose song Hallelujah was covered by artists as varied as Jeff Buckley,Bob Dylan K.D. Lang and Bon Jovi - released his final album You Want it Darker only last month and his son Adam told Rolling Stone, external: "My father passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles with the knowledge that he had completed what he felt was one of his greatest records.

A memorial for Cohen will take place in Los Angeles at a later date, the Facebook announcement added.
