  2. Twenty-one London venues 'at risk' from business rates risespublished at 15:48 BST 11 April 2017

A new report commissioned by the London Mayor Sadiq Kan has identified 21 grassroots music venues at risk of closure due to the government's hike in business rates.

A further 18 music venues in the capital are expected to experience 'significant financial challenges'.

In total, the venues, which include the legendary 100 Club in Oxford Street and The Lexington in Islington (where BBC Introducing host a monthly night of new music) account for up to 530 jobs and contribute up to £21.5m to the economy.

Last year was the first time in a decade that the number of venues across in London remained stable.

Mr Khan - who is calling for tax relief for the venues, said: "London’s grassroots music venues are the foundation of the UK’s world-leading music industry, providing a vital talent pipeline for the artists and stars of tomorrow.

"The way in which the business rates are evaluated for London’s grassroots music venues doesn’t make sense – it is completely unfair to bill a business based on the size of its building and not to take its profits into account."

We'll have more reaction to this in tomorrow's Music News LIVE.

  8. Du Yun wins Pulitzer music prize for human-trafficking operapublished at 13:59 BST 11 April 2017

    Du YunImage source, Matthew Jelacic

Chinese-born composer Du Yun has won the Pulitzer Prize for music for her experimental opera exploring the psychology behind human trafficking.

The one-act opera Angel's Bone premiered last year at New York's Prototype festival and depicts a fictional American couple enslaving and victimizing a pair of angels who stumble upon the property.

Du Yun said she thought it was a prank when she heard she'd won.

According to news agency AFP she said: "To win the award with this piece means so much for me.

"Let's keep being part of the dialogue...Let art be that poetic space where we can initiate such conversations."

Du Yun, who was born in China and now lives in the US said, ahead of the premiere, that she wrote the opera partly out of frustration over the lack of understanding about immigration.

"People talk about the immigrants and have this idea that this is bad, we don't want them in, 'why don't they just get legal,' or build a wall."

"If we are given the opportunity to make profit, then maybe we are not so different from each other.

    Quote Message

I think the dark psychology of human beings is very interesting as an artist."

Previous winners of the award include the leading American composers Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, John Adams and Steve Reich as well as jazz great Wynton Marsalis.

  10. Coachella boss 'turned down' suggestion of a Kate Bush comeback published at 13:23 BST 11 April 2017

    The New Yorker

    Kate BushImage source, Getty Images

That is according to a fascinating behind-the-scenes look, external at one of the world's most glam music festivals in California.

The New Yorker, has spoken to Paul Tollect, the CEO of the company that organises the annual event.

In between some amazing anecdotes about how he managed to get the Rolling Stones (a 40 yard air-conditioned running track for Mick Jagger), insider info on fees ("between three and five million dollars") and the "tented acre" backstage for artists' family and friends, there is an interesting claim about Ms Bush - who, in 2014 played 22 sold-out shows in London after a three decade live break.

In addition to curating the festival lineup, Tollett books all the acts himself and even negotiates offers with agents.

According to Marc Geiger of the artists' agency William Morris: "I’ll say, ‘Kate Bush!’ And he’ll go, ‘No!,’ and we’ll talk through it. I’ll say, ‘She’s never played here, and she just did thirty shows in the U.K. for the first time since the late seventies. You gotta do it! Have to!’

‘No! No one is going to understand it."

    Kate BushImage source, PA

However, Kate's spokeswomen has now fired back, saying "It was never Kate's intention to play any more shows than she did in London.

"The show was conceived for a very specific type of venue. No discussions were ever had with Kate about playing any festival, including Coachella."

The moral here is: You can't turn down what you were never offered in the first place.

  15. Ludacris' digital abs mocked on social mediapublished at 11:02 BST 11 April 2017

    LudacrisImage source, Getty Images

US rapper Ludacris has been subjected to a little online teasing after the video for his latest track Vitamin D appeared online.

The track which features Ty Dolla $ign sees the rapper bemoan the effects of plastic surgery, particularly on women's bodies.

Sadly, we can't embed the video here due to some x-rated lyrics. But rather than the language being controversial, it's the rapper's slightly dodgy-looking CGI six-pack that people have picked up on...
