  10. Stevie Van Zandt hails 'spiritual nourishment' of live musicpublished at 12:28 GMT 9 November 2017

    Paul Glynn
    Music News LIVE reporter

Stevie Van ZandtImage source, Getty Images

Yesterday we told you how thrilled Stevie was to have been officially blessed by the Zeus of rock 'n' roll, Sir Paul McCartney at the opening gig of his UK tour., external

Now, the guitarist-turned-actor-turned frontman has been answering our questions while en route from Leeds to Birmingham for tomorrow night's gig.

After that he and his Disciples of Soul head to Glasgow, Liverpool and Newcastle.

Here's how it's going so far for the 66-year-old Boston rocker...

    1) Stevie welcome back to the UK! What are your earliest and best ever memories of touring here?

The thrill of coming in ‘75 was equal to a religious pilgrimage to the Holy Land, which is exactly what it was for those of us who were reborn by the British Invasion of ‘64.

We only did two shows, but left with the satisfaction of winning over an audience that didn’t know who we were and the certainty that we’d be back to establish a rewarding lifelong relationship with the country that gave us teenagers such hope.

    2) How does it feel to be coming back here as a solo artist? And what are you most looking forward to in the UK? Chips and gravy? Catching up on EastEnders maybe?

I wish I had time for watching TV! I must say it feels good becoming reacquainted with my own music after all these years. It’s like visiting old friends. I’ve put a fantastic band together and I believe we are serving a useful purpose by providing two hours of musical sanctuary away from the political madness going on worldwide. People need a positive breather right now. The spiritual nourishment live music can provide.

Stevie and Sir Macca at the start of his tourImage source, Ryan Celli

    3) Tell us about the Soulfire record. How did it come about and how would you describe your sound?

It is a return to the sound I created with Southside Johnny and my first solo album. Rock meets Soul. It’s a big sound that combines horns, strings, and background vocals with rock guitar. It’s the first album I’ve done whose subject matter isn’t political.

Instead, I’ve used it as an introduction to myself as a songwriter, singer, guitar player, arranger, and producer. I’m covering songs I’ve written for others through the years and have included a few songs I didn’t write from James Brown and Etta James.

    4) What sets your soul on fire Stevie? Be honest now…

The creative process mostly. Writing a new song. Writing a new script. Producing. And that includes live events, records, TV Shows, radio shows, you name it.

I even wrote, directed, and produced a Broadway show a few years ago. But I also enjoy the high energy exchange from great audiences on stage as a performer like we’ve had the entire tour.

    Image caption,

    Down on E Street

    5) Have you seen your old pal Bruce on Broadway? If so what did you make of it? And what does he make of your new stuff?

Yes I saw it twice. It is great. Another art form conquered by The Boss! He loves my new stuff of course! He came on stage with us our first couple of shows to show his support. And I was there opening night on Broadway for him.

    6) Does your experience of being Silvio Dante in The Sopranos help you to deliver a musical performance on stage?

Ha! No, but I’ve noticed the promoters pay right on time lately!

    The SopranosImage source, HBO

    7) What else do you want to achieve in your career?

I have 25 treatments and five completed scripts for TV shows. I want to convince the Hard Rock Cafes to become a circuit for live music. My Rock And Roll Forever Foundation has 100 music history lessons on line right now at TeachRock.org, external for teachers to use worldwide for free and I want to complete 100 more and be in every classroom at every grade level.

I want my Magic Bandanas we created for Ronald McDonald House NYC to be adopted worldwide by McDonald’s for kids with cancer. I want my radio show on in every town in every country. I want the Green Party to wake up and make sense and get funded and be elected everywhere on earth! And...how much time have you got?

    8) That'll do for now!..Finally you’ve just played London’s Roundhouse. If you could ‘roundhouse’ kick any one individual in the world right now, who would it be and why?

You guys are funny. I think you know that answer already. I’ll give you a hint - he’s totally insane, he’s destroying the planet, has the hair of an orangutan... and no his first name isn’t Boris!

    Rolling Stone magazine

    The Bee Gees

With barely contained excitement, we can tell you that a Bee Gees musical is apparently in the works with Barry Gibb, the group's sole surviving member, executive producing the show.

According to a report in Rolling Stone, UTG, which is the live theatre division of Universal, has secured rights to the musical.

In a statement, Barry called the project a "wonderful opportunity" for his family.

"It's another adventure for us and a chance to throw the spotlight on all my brothers and finally the real story of us will be told."

Formed in 1958, the sibling band had many stylistic changes through skiffle, pop, psychedelia and disco and reached their hey day in the 1970s with hits like Stayin' Alive, Night Fever and How Deep Is Your Love.

Barry played the legends slot at Glastonbury this summer.

    That's right folks.

We've broke the back of the week now and are hurtling towards the weekend.

In today's Music News LIVE we'll have Elton John marking 25 years of the charitable foundation he set up to tackle the fight against Aids.

Also, Taylor Swift is among the winners at the Country Music Association awards, a Bee Gees musical is apparently in the works and Drake has helped revive a gritty London drama.

While we're on that subject, the Canadian rapper is apparently spending a lot of money on himself and his future wife (he doesn't know who she is yet) and Eminem teases new music.

Plus we'll look ahead to tonight's Sam Smith at the BBC special and much more throughout the day.
