LA smooth jammers Mini Mansions have unveiled a new video for their single, Works Every Time.

The theatrical video comes with the announcement that a new EP of the same title will be released on 28 September.

If you're not overly-familiar with the LA rock scene but think some of these guys look/sound familiar anyway then it's probably because singer Tyler Parkford has been touring with the Arctic Monkeys on keyboards, while bassist Zach Dawes also appeared on the Sheffield band's latest album - having previously toured with Alex Turner's summer job band, The Last Shadow Puppets).

  5. Johnny Borrell: 'I lost the passion for rock 'n' roll'published at 14:17 BST 25 July 2018

Razorlight and new 'world music' singer 'excited to plug an electric guitar in again'

"The UK has got to be part of the world, in some way," points out Johnny Borrell down the phone from a noisy side street in Shepherd's Bush Market.

"Like most things, it depends which end of the telescope you're looking down."

He's referring to his forthcoming new solo album, which will take in West African, South American, Celtic, Basque and British influences.

The first track from the record, My World, Your Life, was dropped back in May on the same day that Johnny also announced a new fourth Razorlight album would also be on the way - their first since 2008's Slipway Fires.

The London singer/songwriter, whose band had hits in the noughties like Golden Touch and America, has been living - off and on - in France for many years now making solo records, since it all went quiet on the band front.

He told Music News LIVE that he's now excited to perform again with his old indie rock 'n' roll outfit, at this weekend's Y Not Festival,, external after having fallen out of love with the genre.

    Johnny takes up the tale:

    Quote Message

When I was 21 I had some really close friends, they were 19 and they were in a band and they died in a car crash. From that point I decided to put all of my energy into music.

That was the catalyst for forming Razorlight.

"It got to about 2010-11 and I was trying to make a Razorlight album but to be honest I'd had enough of making rock 'n' roll.

"I'd been on tour for about eight years and I didn't have that passion for that kind of music, so I just took a break and thought 'I'm gonna pick up some other instruments and see what happens'".

    Here's what happened most lately:

"From an artistic point of view" he adds, "you're always trying to do something exciting and intoxicating for you."

"Because if it's good for you then it's going to be intoxicating for other people.

    Quote Message

I don't think you can keep pushing the same wheel forever.

    Quote Message

But if a band can grow and stay true to what they're about then that's the ideal isn't it?

The new Razlorlight album is apparently pretty much in the can already, he says, and is a priority over completing his exotic-sounding new solo album, which might be out later this year or early in 2019.

After a much-needed break and a dramatic change of direction, Johnny says he's excited to be going "old school" and recording/performing in front of the Razorlight sign once more.

"I'm excited to plug an electric guitar in again," he beams.

    Quote Message

To play Golden Touch 15 years later and have people knowing the words is amazing. It's a real honour and privilege if people carry your song in their heart and conscience.

Razorlight will perform at the Y Not Festival, alongside headliners The Libertines, Catfish and the Bottlemen and Jamiroquai.

The Derbyshire festival kicks-off tomorrow and will be hoping for better conditions than last year after it was called off a day early due to heavy rain, wind and mud.

The singer's apparent overdose on Tuesday is a heart-wrenching twist for the 25-year-old and all those who had followed her on her rough journey from Disney star to troubled pop icon.

She has been the subject of two documentaries, the first in 2012 while she was still using drugs and the most recent, released last year.

The pressures of being a teen star, a dysfunctional relationship with her father and bullying all contributed to the issues that have threatened to drag her under at various points in her career, those documentaries revealed.

  8. Lin-Manuel Miranda 'very supportive' of Hamilton spoofpublished at 13:16 BST 25 July 2018

    Neil Smith
    Entertainment reporter

Stage sensation Hamilton has already spawned a Grammy-winning, triple-platinum cast recording and an all-star mixtape featuring Alicia Keys, Busta Rhymes and others.

You might not know, though, that it's also inspired a musical parody called Spamilton that comes with its own soundtrack album, external attached.

The playful spoof, which uses Lin-Manuel Miranda's songs about one of America's founding fathers to mock both his blockbuster hip-hop musical and musical theatre in general, has now followed its inspiration across the pond.

Its writer-director, Gerard Alessandrini, says Miranda has been "very supportive" and saw the show twice when it played in New York.

"I vaguely know him, so I knew he had a good sense of humour," he told the BBC after Spamilton's opening night at the Menier Chocolate Factory in south London.

"He hasn’t sued us, so I take that as a good sign."

Miranda, who created Hamilton and played the title character in the original Broadway production, is a character himself in Alessandrini's show, which imagines him as an anxious genius determined to inject life into New York's moribund theatrical scene.

"I am not going to let Broadway rot," he sings in Spamilton's version of Hamilton's rousing My Shot number.

Julie Yammanee and Eddie Elliott in the London production of SpamiltonImage source, Johann Persson

Alessandrini says he had to learn how to write rap himself in order to emulate Miranda's densely packed, linguistically challenging verses.

"Most of the musicals I write are about 100 pages," he said. "This was double the length because there are so many words."

Five new numbers have been added to Spamilton's latest incarnation, among them a mash-up of Les Miserables and Mamma Mia!

"I’m always game to freshen it up and keep it topical," says Gerard, who has not ruled out adding more gags and numbers over the course of the show's London run.

Spamilton continues until 8 September at the Menier Chocolate Factory Theatre, external.

There's no footage online yet, so here's a taste of last year's American production.

  9. Fyre Festival founder to repay more than $27m over fraud chargespublished at 13:00 BST 25 July 2018

    Variety

Billy McFarland, the man behind the aborted Fyre Festival - a luxury music event in the Bahamas - has been ordered to repay money he conned out of his investors.

The music festival - which had backing from rapper Ja Rule (pictured with McFarland, above) - was axed last April after one of the headliners Blink-182 pulled out. Guests arrived to the VIP resort location to be greeted with tents and prepackaged sandwiches, instead of luxury villas and gourmet meals they had been promised.

McFarland pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud earlier this year and has now settled with the Securities and Exchange Commission to the tune of $27.4m (£20.8m) after he and his colleagues fraudulently spent cash from more than 100 investors.

He is also now facing additional charges over a ticketing scam allegedly committed whilst on bail over the Fyre charges.

Sir Elton said he tried to help George Michael with addiction issues prior to his death in 2016.

George died of natural causes aged 53 but his death was linked with previous battle with alcohol and substance abuse.

"You can't help people who don't want to help themselves, I've learnt that as an addict and I'm 28 years clean and sober," Sir Elton told Channel 4 news.

"When people told me when I was using, that I was doing the wrong thing I would get so angry and tell them to go away, or stronger language than that."

Sir Elton has been raising awareness of a new global campaign MenStar to encourage young men to undergo testing for HIV.

Sit Elton and George famously recorded a version of Don't Let The Sun Go Down in 1991.

"I understand George's... When I said a couple of things and he did a whole page interview in Heat magazine saying I should shut up, I understood what his reaction is.

    Quote Message

Addiction is a horrible thing... and there's nothing you can do until you actually say, 'Ok I'm going to do something, I need help'.

"It took me 16 years to say it."

A few summers back, Alex was filmed dancing/singing along in the crowd at the US band's big London's Hyde Park gig, alongside pal and fellow rock star Miles Kane.

There's a swear word in the track in question, Barely Legal, though so we can't bring it you here but you can find it easily online if you don't mind that and somehow need further proof of Al's dedication to Julian Casablancas' outfit.

Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Cardi B and Lily Allen are among those sending "love and prayers" to US pop singer Demi Lovato after she was admitted to hospital in Los Angeles following a suspected drug overdose.

LA police reportedly responded on Tuesday to a medical emergency in the Hollywood Hills, where Lovato lives. TMZ reports the 25-year-old was found unconscious and treated at the scene with Naloxone, an anti-overdose medicine.

The Sorry Not Sorry singer was in a stable condition, US media reported.

Her spokesperson told the BBC: "Demi is awake and with her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers and support.

"Some of the information being reported is incorrect and they respectfully ask for privacy."

Lovato has struggled with substance abuse for years, and was feared to have relapsed in recent weeks. Earlier in the year she released a song called Sober (below), chronicling her battle with alcohol and substance abuse.
