Newbie Tuesday #41: Young LA rockers ready to rip open Reading + Leeds this weekend

Anyone found lying in their tents still hungover at lunchtime this weekend at Reading + Leeds might find they leave the festival with one or two regrets.

Not least because an LA four-piece, named after that very same feeling (almost) will be hard at work waking up the main stage at around that time on Friday/Saturday.

If and when you do surface, don't expect to find The Regrettes easing you into the day though, as when Lydia, Sage and Genessa (above) have a platform, they're generally not afraid to use it.

On stage at Coachella the girls addressed sexual assault at festivals. They then went after the NRA at a benefit gig following a school shooting in the States. Oh and don't even get them started on their President.

"People are angry and to kind of gloss over things are happening in the world and not try to educate and open up conversations I think is naive and stupid" explains frontwoman Lydia Night (above, centre) of the stagecraft/songwriting approach.

"Especially for a band with a platform. You should use your platform to talk about things and remind people they should be discussing these things and asking questions and calling people out.

"If you're not, you're part of the problem."

The band, who graduated from the School Of Rock in L.A - like the US equivalent of The Brit school - dropped their new EP, Attention Seeker earlier this year, which moves between punk rock, acoustic indie and 50s doo wop US pop.

While they don't care too much for labels, they do agree that there is a distinct West Coast vibe to their music.

"It would be impossible for us to not be somewhat influenced by that," adds Lydia.

"We go to shows in LA, we see bands from LA all the time so we might be influenced in ways that we don't even realise."

They don't engage in turf wars with rival local bands or East Coast visitors just for the sake of it, however.

"I think people are competitive. We kind of stay out of that - I think it's silly. I think there's room for everyone.

"There are people who are mean who just because you're in a band and they're in a band and that's bull."

Bandmate Genessa Gariano adds: "We try to stay away from anyone who is being too selfish."

The latest addition to the band is drummer Drew, who joined ahead of their gigs at this year's Great Escape new music festival in Brighton.

His addition was so late that he had to fly over on his own in time for a warm up debut gig at Heartbreakers in Southampton.

"I was learning all these songs in a week" he says.

"I was on it. I put them on my iPod for on the plane".

When pressed on what happened to their previous drummer, of almost two years, band leader Lydia gives a rather cryptic response.

"He was a part of the Illuminati and he talked about it too much so they got mad at him and told him he wasn't allowed to be in a band anymore as he was spilling too much in interviews - it was too much exposure for them."

We're not sure if we believe that story but it's certainly good exposure for The Regrettes too.

What we are sure of, dear festival-goer, is that they'll open the bank holiday double header with a bang on both days - whether you're ready or not.

Last night, Disclosure caught us all off guard by dropping a brand new track, Moonlight, and today they have decided to follow it up with another.

Demi Lovato turned 26 yesterday, and the pop star's family have taken to social media to share some heartfelt thoughts.

Just a few weeks ago, Lovato was admitted to hospital after a drug overdose, and is now receiving treatment in a rehab facility.

Lovato's sister, Madison De La Garza, shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram page, thanking the teams who saved her sister's life.

"Today could have been one of the worst days of my life, but instead i get to spend it thanking God, the incredible doctors, Demi's team, and everyone across the world who offered their support - without all of these people i wouldn't have my big sister anymore.

    Quote Message

I've been thinking about how i wish that everyone could see the silly little things that she does, like how her nostrils move when she says certain words and when she brushes my hair behind my ear when i'm trying to sleep, because those are the things i'm thankful for today. they seem so small, but those little things make up my sister - not a singer, not a celebrity, and definitely not what she's been described as in the media - she's a daughter, a friend, and my big sister... and i am so, so thankful that i can tell her happy birthday.#happybirthdaydemi❤️

It’s the first time Madison has spoken out after Demi's overdose, though she was among one of the first people spotted going to her house after she was rushed to hospital.

Demi's mother, Dianna De La Garza, also posted that she felt "blessed beyond belief."

So as we've discovered today, some people were not overly-pleased with Madge's indulgent tribute to Aretha Franklin.

But she's still the Queen of Pop and having turned 60 only last week, Stockport indie band Blossoms have honoured her landmark birthday with a music tribute.

Check out Blossoms cover of La Isla Bonita for Radio 2 above.

That's a sentence we never thought we'd type.

The MTV Video Music Awards was a star-studded event, but one band in particular was missing from the famous pink carpet.

BTS, the K-Pop sensation, were nowhere to be seen and their army of fans were disappointed, to say the least.

However, some fans decided to bring BTS to the VMAs in New York, USA, even if they didn't show up.

Twitter users started posted images of the group saying they were arriving at the award show, leading some to believe that they were in fact attending the event.

    Sneaky.

Many of the BTS Army were disappointed when they realised that the band weren't actually going to appear at the ceremony.

Looks like the BTS army can still find the positive side.

Long Island musical prodigies The Lemon Twigs dazzled the Green Man crowd before sunset on Friday with a high octane - and in parts confusing - set of retro rock 'n' roll-cum-rock opera-style bangers.

They were also the best dressed band in the Brecon Beacons by some distance.

Guitarist/singer Brian, the older of the uber-talented D’Addario brothers, at 20, was pleased with how their new songs went down in Wales.

"They went down better than anything else we've ever played", he told us after the set.

The young New Yorker, who learned classical guitar at 12 said he and brother Michael were already "done with the obligation" of the usual album/tour cycle and "are going to do what we want" from here on in.

That includes hopefully writing movie soundtracks and in the case of new second album, Go To School, a full blown musical.

It centres around an ape called Shane who is forced to go to a human school and features their mum and dad, as well as rock stars Todd Rundgren and Jody Stephens of Big Star.

"It came from the fact we were writing a bunch of songs about the purity of the soul," explained Brian.

    Quote Message

And a lot of the time you're born good and you end up meeting people along the way who corrupt you and make you sour.

    Media caption,

Lemon Twigs: Brian D’Addario on the difference between a musical and a rock opera

So could Shane's story one day make it to the West End then? Or even Broadway?

"Sure it was written that way, I'd like to happen very much," said Brian, who cites The Who's Quadraphenia and Soap Opera by The Kinks' as among his favourite musical/rock opera albums.

"That's wishful thinking but I'd love it.

"We'd just have to be very involved and be very very controlling and problematic during that whole process!" he added, with a grin.

"I shouldn't say that because it'll sabotage it."

Listen above to Brian explaining the exact differences between a rock musical and rock opera.

Go To School is out on Friday and the band will support the Arctic Monkeys on their UK/Ireland stadium tour next month.

The VMA Awards: 'I had a baby...and now I'm still winning awards'

Today we've been telling you all about last night's big awards bash in New York, now we can have a look at some more of the action.

Local gal Cardi B picked up the award for best new artist, just weeks after giving birth to a baby girl in July.

"I carried a baby...and now I'm still winning awards" declared the New York rapper, in typically modest style.

As you know by now Camila Cabello won the biggest award of the night for video of the year for her song Havana and the Queen of Pop raised a few eyebrows with her 'tribute' to the Queen of the Soul.

  9. Teenage Fanclub: Albums are a window into a little moment in timepublished at 12:28 BST 21 August 2018

    Paul Glynn
    Music News LIVE reporter

Norman Blake from Teenage FanclubImage source, Getty Images

Teenage Fanclub dusted themselves down and rolled back the years with a set of indie hits at Green Man Festival on Saturday night.

For the past eight years frontman Norman Blake has been living in Kitchener-Waterloo, Canada - roughly halfway between Toronto and Detroit - coming "back and forth" to the UK for band duties.

The Scots band have put out 11 albums in total since 1990 and the 52-year-old singer/guitarist says it doesn't take long to get the fingers moving in the right places again.

"We've been playing for so long they're kind of indelibly imprinted on your brain!" he joked, before their performance on the Far Out stage.

"The motor memory comes back immediately for most of them - it's amazing how it works."

The Fanclub have just re-issued five of their classic Creation Records albums on vinyl again, after some of them went out of print. Bandwagonesque, Thirteen, Grand Prix (his favourite - as that's when he met his wife Krista), Songs From Northern Britain and Howdy! were all re-mastered at the iconic Abbey Road Studios and now the band will perform them all live in chronological order on tour in October.

All of which has left Norman and the guys - muscle memory aside - with a bit more homework to do over the coming months.

    Quote Message

We've been listening back but it's masochistic to listen to your own music! It's much better to listen to other people's music.

Other people like the Arctic Monkeys, who with their latest album Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino perhaps did their best to preserve the album format, by not putting out any singles prior to release.

"I think it's great they did" said Norman.

"An album is window into a little moment in time.

"When you listen to that album your listening to a snippet in that band's life

"If you just put out a song and another six months later it all becomes a bit ephemeral."

Does it blow Norman's mind then to think that the re-releases could potentially add a whole new younger layer to the Fanclub fanclub?

    Quote Message

It does. But then i think back to myself when i was that age and i was buying records, I was born in '65 and I like a lot of records from the mid-late 60s.

"The garage punk thing... I almost said 'gar-arge' then because I live in Canada!

"I think there's a nostalgic thing that everyone has."

He added: "A lot of kids that were born when we put those albums out [1991-2000] out seem to like them too.

    "There's something mysterious about it.

"Then you meet the artist and you're like 'bloody hell they're old!'"

Norman was hoping to have "a pint of real ale" with his pal Euros Childs of Welsh band Gorky's Zygotic Mynci at Green Man. The pair have another band together called Jonny and Norman has also produced a forthcoming album from a Norwegian band called I Was a King.

The Scotsman believes that the apparent resurgence in vinyl over recent years is a matter of both sound and vision, as David Bowie once nearly said.

"It's the best listening experience and the best artwork experience.

"Looking at the lyrics as it plays is a thing that people enjoy and it's something that we lost when we went to CDs and I think people are getting back into the idea of that.

"Also if you're young and don't have a lot of money and can't afford to buy art then buy an album and you've instantly got an art collection."

The singer and Mamma Mia! sequel star has been treating fans to a bit of Hollywood gossip at her recent shows.

The 72-year-old pop star/actress is still going strong and during a gig in Atlantic City she admitted that she was once made to feel insecure about her age, because of her Witches of Eastwick director George Miller and co-star Jack Nicholson.

"Alright, sit down, because I'm going to tell you a fabulous story," Cher said, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

    "A true story, OK?"

She went on to describe how she had been "dreading" turning 40 but after a "fantastic" birthday party and meeting future boyfriend Rob Camilletti she was feeling good about life.

"So I went to sleep, dreaming these fabulous thoughts of being 40 and it was good," she said with a smile.

"And I was going to get all these movies and I was just so happy.

    Quote Message

And in the morning, my telephone rang and the man said, 'Hi, Cher, it's George Miller.' I said, 'Hey, George.' He was the director of Witches of Eastwick. So he said, 'I just wanted to call and tell you that I don't want you in my movie and Jack Nicholson and I think you're too old and you're not sexy.' Good morning, 40!

The bosses of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again clearly think Cher still has plenty to give, casting her in the role of Ruby Sheridan aka Donna’s mother and Sophie’s grandmother.

The star also revealed a few weeks back that the new film had inspired her to record an entire album of Abba covers.

The Midlands comic spits out some harsh truths and throws out some shapes in a parody of the US rapper's smash hit video for This is America.

This is the TV, sees Henry ironically declare the old goggle box to be dead in the digital age, in a sketch for his 60th birthday telly special, which is coming up later in the year.

Watch above as as Lenny raps: "This is the TV / Don’t catch you watching now / Kids don’t be watching now /They all watching YouTube now,”

The original video by Childish Gambino tackled gun crime in America and won the award for 'video with a message' at last night's MTV VMA Awards.

It's now been viewed more than 372 million times.

Sir Len's b'day special will be hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald, who appears in the above video too, and we reckon he'd be happy with similar numbers.

Madonna paid tribute to Aretha Franklin at the MTV VMAs - but her long speech didn't go down well with some viewers who thought she was self-indulgent.

The Queen of Pop was asked to speak about the late Queen of Soul at Monday's award ceremony in New York.

She delivered a five-minute speech ending with her giving thanks to Franklin for "empowering all of us".

But she faced criticism on social media for the fact most of the speech was an anecdote about her own career.

In her speech, Madonna talked about an audition at the start of her career when she sang Franklin's (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.

She told the audience about how she auditioned for "two very large French record producers" who "did not take me seriously".

She continued: "And why should they? Some skinny ass white girl is going to come up here and belt out a song by one of the greatest soul singers that ever lived, a capella?"

Madonna went on to describe how the producers didn't call her for weeks but said they wanted to take her to Paris to make her a star.

So you're probably all wondering why I'm telling you this story...There is a connection. Because none of this would have happened, could have happened, without our Lady of Soul. She led me to where I am today, and I know she influenced so many people in this house tonight, and I want to thank you Aretha for empowering all of us. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Long live the queen.

The Canadian megastar went to see young Sofia Sanchez at Lurie's Children Hospital of Chicago on Monday.

The visit came after Sophia, who turned 11 on Saturday, said she had just two birthday wishes:

    1. To receive a new heart and...
    2. To meet the God's Plan rapper

Sofia underwent open heart surgery three weeks ago and is currently on the waiting list for a transplant.

But she can now tick number two off her list for sure.

Drake posted the above pic alongside the caption: "Me and my love Sofia talking about Bieber and Owls and Basketball."

In that case we hope Sofia likes the Toronto Raptors, like Drizzy, who is often seen court side.

Good luck with your op, Sophie.

  18. You and us at 9 ishpublished at 08:49 BST 21 August 2018

Morning all and welcome back to Tuesday's MNL.

Coming up today, lots of action from the MTV VMAs, including big wins for Camila Cabello and Madonna's indulgent tribute to Aretha Franklin.

Elsewhere Drake visits a sick fan in hospital, Cher recalls being told she wasn't "sexy" enough for one Hollywood star and UK comic Lenny Henry does his best Childish Gambino impersonation.

Later on we'll have more from backstage at Green Man Festival and a Newbie Tuesday artist set to rock open Reading + Leeds this weekend.

Before all that let's kick off with a Hottest Record from You Me at Six, who popped in for a chat with Radio 1's Benji B last night.

Check it out above and we'll get right to it.
