  5. Newbie Tuesday #5: How a work accident pushed Dan Owen into musicpublished at 13:56 GMT 5 December 2017

    Dan OwenImage source, Dan Owen

Hailing from Shrewsbury in Shropshire, 25-year-old bluesy folk singer Dan Owen started playing guitar at the age of nine and, at the age of 13, joined his older sister, a singer, in his guitar teacher's folk band, touring the county's pubs.

"It was alright in Shropshire cause you're going off into the hills where no-ones going to tell you off for being in a pub when you're only 13-years-old.

"I wasn't drinking, it was my dad's excuse for going to the pub I think, like, 'the kids have got to go...'"

The pair then performed at open mics as a duo before the elder sibling went to university leaving the fledgling band.

"I thought I'll try singing and I got up in a pub and did an old blues number and people seemed to like it."

Armed with a repertoire of "around 60-70 blues" songs, 16-year-old Dan (or Blues Boy Dan as he became to be known locally) - who was also training to be a carpenter - concentrated on open mic nights and the occasional solo show.

But it was an injury which cut short his apprenticeship: "I was about six months in and loving it and I was walking past a machine and a piece of wood flipped out and hit me in the eye and knackered my left eye, it doesn't work any more, which gave me depth perception problems and double vision.

"When I tried to start again, it was really tough - my head could do it, my eyes could do and my hands could definitely do it but all working together, it wasn't happening."

Carpentry's loss was music gain though, and the young artists channeled his frustration into a piece of wood with six strings in his song Hideaway, external as he explains (below).

    Media caption,

Singer-songwriter Dan Owen performs and explains his song Hideaway

He continued performing the pub circuit in rural Shropshire.

"I'd have happily done pub gigs forever because I loved it," he admits.

But some of those early gigs somehow made it on to YouTube and the young singer began being inundated with praise from across the world.

    Quote Message

It was weird, I'd never been abroad, I'd been to Wales and Cornwall, I'd never even been to Scotland."

The singer uploaded a song on to BBC Introducing Shropshire in 2015 and found fans in hosts Adam Crowther and Jolon Kemp Walker.

Last week, he was played on rotation on Radio 1 as the Introducing artist of the week.

Dan credits his inspiration to classic blues, obviously but says his musical experience is as much shaped by metal and rock as well as fellow songwriters like Paolo Nutini.

"But my boots are still firmly in the blues," he adds. "I'll go back there one day."

He has spent the summer playing European festivals and recording tracks for his debut album, no mean feat considering he wrote "about 160 tracks for a ten track album".

    "Hopefully they're good.

"I can't wait to get it out, it's my first album."

We can't wait to hear it.

Another up-and-coming songwriter Noel Gallagher began writing his future hits in the work office - aka 'the hit hut' - after injury prevented him from working on the building site.

So you're in good company Dan.

The firing of Bryan Singer from the forthcoming Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody is the latest speed bump in the history of what is an increasingly troubled movie.

Here's a quick look back at some of the major hurdles the production has faced since its announcement back in 2010.

Sacha Baron CohenImage source, Getty Images

    Ali G to Freddie M

In 2010, Borat star Sacha Baron Cohen was cast as Freddie Mercury.

Speaking to the BBC, guitarist Brian May said: "We have Sacha Baron Cohen, which will probably be a shock to a lot of people, but he's been talking with us for a long time.

"I think we'll try and keep ourselves out of it as much as we can," May added.

Armed with a script by Peter Morgan, who wrote the Oscar-winning The Queen and with the full backing of the surviving members of the band, it looked like a winner in the making.

But three years later, Cohen was gone, blaming that old classic, "creative differences".

Industry newspaper Variety, external said the actor's manager confirmed the news, saying he clashed with producers over the film's tone.

Speaking to US DJ Howard Stern (below), he claimed the script had Freddie Mercury dying from Aids in the middle of movie.

Shortly afterwards, Paddington and Bond star Ben Whishaw joined the production in the lead role while it was rumored British actor-turned director Dexter Fletcher was also attached to the film.

    Whishaw unsure

In 2014 however, Deadline reported Fletcher too had gone, external over a disagreement with producers on the direction of the film.

Then later that year, in an interview with Time Out, external, Whishaw cast doubt on the film going ahead at all.

He said: "I don’t know what’s happening, it seems to be on a back burner. It was going, then there were problems getting the script working."

In 2015, attempts to get the film back and running were made, bringing in The Theory of Everything screenwriter Anthony McCarten.

Around this time, they also announced a potential name of the film Bohemian Rhapsody, one of the band's greatest hits.

    Unreliable

Then, on 1 December, production was suspended so director Singer could deal with "a personal health matter".

Twentieth Century Fox told the BBC work had been temporarily halted "due to the unexpected unavailability" of Singer.

The director's representative said it was "a personal health matter concerning Bryan and his family".

The Hollywood Reporter added some fuel to the fire reporting Rami Malek and producers were in conflict with the director, with claims he showed up late to set.

Just a few days later, 20th Century Fox confirmed the director had been fired due to "unreliable behaviour".

Singer has insisted his firing came while he was ill and that the studio was "unwilling to accommodate" him during his illness.

    Quote Message

Bohemian Rhapsody is a passion project of mine. With fewer than three weeks to shoot remaining, I asked Fox for some time off so I could return to the U.S. to deal with pressing health matters concerning one of my parents.

    Quote Message

This was a very taxing experience, which ultimately took a serious toll on my own health. Unfortunately, the studio was unwilling to accommodate me and terminated my services. This was not my decision and it was beyond my control."

He added: "While, at times, we did have creative differences on set, Rami and I successfully put those differences behind us".

And so closes another chapter on Bohemian Rhapsody's rocky road.

Cover stars of the iconic fashion mag usually give an interview to go with their image being plastered all over the front but Taylor does things a little differently.
