  2. Weslee: The band with the big first-ever gigpublished at 14:48 GMT 6 November 2018

Newbie Tuesday #52 get thrown in at the deep end of pop

Most new bands have to work the local gig scene, then perform in toilets up and down the land before maybe one day getting a shot at the big time.

For most it never actually arrives.

Transatlantic electro-pop duo Weslee, however, didn't get that memo it seems.

Emma DD and Josh Grant from the band, who are usually found buried within recording studios in London or New York/Los Angeles working on other people's tracks, had to quite literally get their act together pretty rapidly after their own band's debut single found its way into the hands of Radio 1's Annie Mac earlier this year.

The DJ asked them to perform at one of her London club nights in February alongside local pop star Jessie Ware and New York band Sunflower Bean and the rest was (fairly recent) history.

"Yeah we were lucky," says Josh.

"I guess someone from Annie Mac’s team had found our first song we put out called Gassed and had been behind that and then they had just basically asked us do we want to support.

"And we thought ‘I guess now we have to figure out how to play live!'"

"Obviously I was very nervous," adds singer Emma.

"Being thrown in, you sort of sink or swim," admits Josh, "and you sort of blackout throughout the whole thing.

"The Jessie Ware thing was so nerve-wracking you don’t really experience any of it, you're sort of like ‘what's going on?'"

Since that fateful night they've been supported by BBC Music Introducing in London and released their debut EP, 9F.

The title references Emma's favourite aisle seat on a plane, which goes to show how much time she's spent in the air over the last year.

The Londoner moved to New York City, initially to study but "just never went to school," as she was so busy writing/producing music.

Kansas-born bandmate Josh, who she met in the studio in NYC - working on tracks with the likes of Chance the Rapper and Izzy Bizu - then made the exact opposite move to London after "meeting a girl."

"I guess I'm a romantic," he jokes, "I just got on a plane and never went home.

    "We’ve swapped countries!"

Emma helped him embrace British culture by teaching him about chocolate biscuits and street slang though he's "yet to conquer using that in public."

Since then the two best friends have had to make the most of their precious time together and then work on tracks over the internet.

"We have yet to go ‘hey, here’s a track - write to it’, we like to at least be in the same room to start stuff,” states Josh.

The next time singer Emma and keyboardist Josh meet will be later this week for a gig in Chicago - only their second ever Stateside gig, following one in Brooklyn.

They'll perform as a five piece, with an additional drummer and two backing singers.

“I can only sing one part at time," declares Emma, "there’s about 50 things going on at once, I can’t do it all man!”

The songwriting duo have about seven new songs they're "happy with" that “might turn into something".

If that something turns out to be special then they might well have to do what most bands do and actually commit to a full tour, rather than simply “sporadic gigs".

    Heaven forbid.

“I don’t think either one of us want to get in a van and drive around - maybe we do," contemplates Josh,

"London gigs are fine because we’re here!"

“You’re here!" corrects Emma, down the phone line from California.

So far, aside from their breakout track, they've come up with infectiously catchy pop hooks like Bathwater (above) and Boy Like You (below) which they say comes pretty naturally in Weslee world.

Emma says: "Generally speaking the moment you think too much about it it doesn't work, I freak myself out."

"Emma’s very good at policing me on the overthinking as I tend to get in my head," adds self-confessed Frank Ocean 'fanboy' Josh.

“I grew up around music," Emma goes on, "music is an emotion, it's always changing, it depends on how I feel."

"Yeah, it's crappy outside so I want to listen to some depressing music," says Josh, as winter takes hold of the English capital.

Sun-drenched Emma begs to differ: “Oh my god it’s not crappy outside, it’s so hot here!"

Weslee: A band for all seasons but big occasions only.

We don't really do Christmas news in early November.

So we can't really tell you that most of the artists for Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball 2018 at London's O2 Arena have now been announced.

Or that on Saturday 8 December the likes of Anne-Marie and Liam Payne will perform, alongside Ellie Goulding, Olly Murs and Rita Ora.

The following day will see Mabel, Jess Glynne, Years & Years and Clean Bandit take to the stage, as well as Zara Larsson, Jason Derulo and Cheryl (scroll down for more about her new single).

Head over to the Capital website for more info.

  5. Cheryl teases returnpublished at 12:50 GMT 6 November 2018

    gggggImage source, Getty Images

After four years out the music biz, the former Girls Aloud singer is set to return on Friday.

Cheryl's new track, Love Made Me Do - her first since her split from Liam Payne - is a good old fashioned love song and it's been co-written by former bandmate Nicola Roberts.

She said in a statement: “It’s something that anyone who’s been in love will be able to relate to in some way or another.

“It’s catchy and it’s fun. It’s not about one specific person or relationship, it’s more about me being the lover of love that I am. I just love love!”

    Can't argue with that.

Cheryl's last album Only Human came in 2014.

  6. Ariana Grande denies involvement with tracks on streaming sitespublished at 11:46 GMT 6 November 2018

    BBC Newsbeat

An album of what appeared to be unreleased Ariana Grande songs had nothing to do with the singer herself, Newsbeat understands.

Fans had been speculating whether she secretly released a whole album under a different identity.

Someone going by the name of Zandhr put the collection, called Nobody Does It Better, on several streaming services.

But a source close to the singer has told Newsbeat the album "was not affiliated with her" in any way.

After several users started debating online whether the 10 tracks were Ariana singing or not, the songs became unavailable.

The tracks included Cadillac and Champagne, which were thought to be versions of Ariana's previously unreleased songs.

The former Oasis frontman is also yet to reveal the inspiration behind the cat's name, but it could well be a nod to the late Sex Pistols rocker Sid Vicious.

Aretha Franklin: In her own words

A long-awaited Aretha Franklin documentary will premiere in New York City - 46 years after being filmed.

Amazing Grace was shot by director Sydney Pollack in 1972, but it spent decades in an unedited form.

Years of legal complications followed, and now it will finally debut at the DOC NYC festival on 12 November, with the support of the singer's estate.

The Queen of Soul - known for hits like Respect and Think - died of cancer in August, aged 76 and was given a star-studded send off.

The film was only finished in 2011 because of technical problems, After that, Franklin and her lawyers blocked the film's release repeatedly, once suing producer Alan Elliot for using her likeness without her permission.

Legal clearance finally came after the singer's death, when her family members were open to seeing the film.
