Details of Sir Simon Rattle's People's concert with the London Symphony Orchestra have been announced.

The free concert will take place on Sunday 1 July 2018 and will be streamed for the first time on YouTube, so you can watch online if you're not one of the 10,000 people in London's Trafalgar Square.

Sir Simon will conduct 100 musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra, alongside 50 young musicians from the LSO On Track programme in East London and musicians from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

The programme will feature music on a theme of dance and ballet by Dvorak, Massenet, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky and includes a world premiere by 29 year-old composer and pianist Kate Whitley, founder of Peckham Car Park’s Multi-Story Orchestra.

Judging by his statement, Sir Simon can't wait:

    Quote Message

This is a dream concert for me on a stage like no other. I hope that the excitement of the musicians of the London Symphony Orchestra playing beside these brilliant young musicians in such an extraordinary public space will fire people’s imaginations. And prove that, inside or outside the walls of a concert hall, the experience of great music is for everyone.

  4. Newbie Tuesday #20: Nilufer Yanya 'I dropped my guitar at a gig'published at 15:24 BST 27 March 2018

    Kev Geoghegan
    Music News LIVE reporter

    Media caption,

Nilüfer Yanya performs Baby Luv in session for BBC Music Introducing.

She's been playing the guitar since she was 12 years old and the piano even before then but the London singer-songwriter's worst gig memories linger fresh in her memory.

"I dropped a guitar once, I also remember in France, it was a really beautiful festival and the sound was bouncing off the inside of the tent and I started singing the song in a completely different key.

"I don't think anyone really noticed but about halfway through the song I realised and thought, 'Oh my God, I'm singing in the wrong key. It was terrible."

That little wrinkle aside, the 22-year-old's sparse lo-fi confessional songwriting has been picking up a growing fanbase since she was included in the BBC's Sound of 2018 list.

She first uploaded music to BBC Introducing London four years ago.

"People always ask me about it [the Sound of... list]," she laughs. "I think a lot more people have heard my music now than might have which is great."

Born into an artist family in west London, Nilufer began playing music at the age of seven but it wasn't until she picked up a guitar a few years later, inspired by songwriters like Nina Simone and Jeff Buckley, that she began to write her own songs.

"I always knew that I intended to write songs with a guitar, so it became a tool to help me write.

"I used to perform at school, like the end of term performances, but I think my first solo show was when I was about 18, which was scary but the adrenaline was pumping.

"I got up the next morning for work and I was still buzzing."

    Quote Message

This is the end / I don’t think we can be friends / Just being honest 'cause I don’t want to make things better / Thanks for nothing, lasts forever / And even when we were together / Well, let’s be honest

    Thanks 4 Nothing

She attended the Pimlico School in south London, whose alumni include La Roux singer Ellie Jackson and rapper and actor Adhley Walters.

"The school was failing but it had a really amazing musical department and because it was failing they turned it into an Academy," she says.

"They lost funding from the government for the arts and it all went into other subjects so all the music teachers left," she says.

With continued fears over the future of funding of music in schools, she adds: "I think I had a good music education and I'm really grateful but it's sad to think other people won't get that because even a small amount really benefits you."

With a wisdom and bluntless that belie her years, Nilufer's tracks deal with the pain and loss and occasional indifference that love can bring.

Her latest single Thanks 4 Nothing is "about the transience of life" and how "you can be really good friends and then the next year see them and not even want to say hello".

She adds: "I think it's really interesting and sad but also just the way life is and the way the world is".

With festival season around the corner, Nilufer is playing The Great Escape in Brighton and The End of the Road this summer and welcomes the growing moves to make line-ups more gender balanced.

"I think it's across the board in all industries but especially in music you notice it, the sad thing is that as you're growing up, you take it as part of the job and don't think to question it too much.

"The action has to come from the inside, the bigger festivals will be the last to do it, the smaller ones will do it first if they haven't already started it.

"As a female artist, it's puzzling, there's no real reason other than people being stuck in their ways and being stubborn."

The girlband have set a UK chart record as their album Glory Days is now the longest-reigning Top 40 girl group album ever.

They've overtaken legends like the Spice Girls and the Supremes for this achievement.

Their fourth album which was their first chart topping album was released in November 2016, and has so far been in the album Top 40 for 69 weeks.

    Good work.

And in other Little Mix news Gabrielle Aplin has a conspiracy theory about the girls and their current Japanese tour.

Less than 48 hours - that's what it took for a statue of David Bowie to be hit by vandals.

The bronze sculpture in Aylesbury, entitled Earthly Messenger, was unveiled at the weekend.

It marks the place where he debuted his Ziggy Stardust persona.

"Feed the homeless first," was written in front of it, "RIP DB" on a wall beside it and a section of the statue was painted on.

Money to create the work was raised through grants and a £100,000 crowdfunding appeal.

Tiffany told the story in GQ magazine, external, who approached Beyonce's people but they said they knew nothing about it.

But that didn't stop the Beyhive becoming amateur sleuths and turning to Twitter to work out who they think it was.

Double Canadian Country Music Association winner Lindi Ortega says her latest album In the Mirror, a Fractured Reflection - inspired by Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western soundtracks - has helped deal with her own demons.

The music follows a character on the journey from a bleak place where "daylight never comes", to one of hope and liberation.

While the story is fictional, it mirrors Ortega's own personal struggle with body dysmorphic disorder.

"My self-image grew so distorted that I actually convinced myself I was deformed.

"People often ask me where my dark, lonely songs come from. This is that place."

Ortega's condition even led to her wearing veils and wide-brimmed hats on stage to hide her face.

She's been speaking to our music reporter Mark Savage.

She told Paper it's not likely to be a permanent change in image.

I've always been someone that obviously loves to experiment, loves theatrics, loves to create a storyline and play a character in a video or through stage. I'm a performer, that's who I am by nature. But I'm at the place, even musically, where it's a liberating feeling to be able to strip it all back and appreciate who you are and your raw beauty.

It helps that at the age of 37 you still apparently have the fresh skin of a teenager, we guess.

Mike Shinoda has announced plans to play a free show in Los Angeles as part of the Asian Pacific Heritage Month.

It's the first solo gig which the musician, whose father is Japanese, will play since his friend and bandmate Chester Bennington took his own life last year.

He released a three-track EP in January as a response to the loss of Chester and said at the time.

"The past six months have been a rollercoaster...at its core, grief is a personal, intimate experience.

"Art has always been the place I go when I need to sort through the complexity and confusion of the road ahead. I don't know where this path goes, but I'm grateful I get to share it with you."

The Hertfordshire singer-songwriter is looking set to dethrone The Greatest Showman soundtrack from the top of the UK album chart on Friday.

His album Staying At Tamara's is ahead of the film compilation album in midweek sales figures.

The Greatest Showman, featuring the vocal talents of Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron and Zendaya, has been at the top for 11 weeks, matching a record set by Adele.

George's 2014 debut, Wanted On Voyage, also topped the chart.

Meanwhile, Drake's ninth week at Number 1 with God's Plan means he is now the only artist in official charts history to have two songs in the UK's longest-reigning list, following the success of One Dance.

Remember that one? It was number one for 15 weeks in 2016.
