Essex @ World Jamboree 07You are in: Essex > Young People > Essex @ World Jamboree 07 > Countdown to the jamboree ![]() Hylands Park has now become a mini city Countdown to the jamboreeWith less than a week to go until the world's biggest scouting festival gets underway, we catch up with how the construction of the sight at Hylands Park is progressing. Essex's county town is about to go global. Forty thousand young people from over two hundred countries will arrive in Chelmsford for the 21st World Scout Jamboree on Friday, 27, July. Organising an event of this scale takes an awful lot of planning, in fact Chelmsford Borough Council have been looking at the project for ten years.
By mid-July, the site is starting to take shape, as site manager Nigel Hailey explains: "It is very busy, there's been a big change. "We've had lots of people helping us, there's lots of marquees up now and lots of our smaller festival tents. We've erected about 500 already out of the thousand we need to do." Much of the work in building the site has been assisted by volunteers, including helpers who have already arrived from around the world such as Chile, Holland and Uganda. Given the scale of the task there have been a few challenges that Nigel has had to overcome. He told us about two of the biggest issues he's had to deal with: "First, a lot of the equipment we were looking for has been delayed at Glastonbury because of the mud there. "The second one is that it's great having 500 volunteers over the weekend to help us build, but that takes quite a lot of organisation to keep them all busy and happy." BBC Essex reporter Colleen Harris has been following the progress of the building work at Hylands Park ahead of the opening on Friday.
